  1. LCLS Undulator System Update S. Milton, ANL FAC, April 20th, 2006

  2. Safety Slide ESH Work Authorization form 1st Articles Initial Measurements Mu-metal shields Go forward plan SUT Quick Status Long range plan Vacuum System Single path recommendation Focus on solving all issues Full length prototype in June RF BPM Progress Mechanical Brazing Testing Beam Finder Wire Progress OTR S1 Beam Loss Monitoring System Delayed due to engineering availability SLAC Measurements MMF (SLAC) Assembly Planning Outline

  3. Integrated Safety Management • Damaged Translation Slide • Many Causes • Root Issue • Did not fully follow all ISM processes • Corrective Actions • Retraining in ISM basics • Additional engineering and administrative controls put in place

  4. Work Authorization Checklist

  5. 1st Articles (See White’s Talk) • One each received from the two vendors • Initial Measurements and Tuning • x/y trajectories well under the 2 micron limit • RMS phase error well under the 10 deg. limit

  6. Undulator Production • Mu-metal Shields • Will be implemented to buck Earth’s field • Currently working out the tuning procedure and overall effectiveness • Go Ahead • Will be given shortly to the vendors pending overall acceptance • Production Plans • Expect 10 to 15 complete by end of fiscal year

  7. Single Undulator Test (See Pile’s Talk) • Phase I • Complete assembly with either production or mock up in magnet measurement lab • Full fit up expected plan by the end of April • Phase II • Complete assembly with all production components • Tunnel mockup included • Will remain at ANL for refinement, trouble shooting, and value engineering

  8. Single Path Pursued Our project management oversight group was adamant about not pursuing an alternate time. Considered too costly Make what we have work Current focus Solve all issues Prototype Full length prototype expected late June early July completion Schedule Still considered an undulator system critical path item Vacuum System (See Walter’s Talk)

  9. RF BPM • First Prototype Completed • Bench Measurements • No surprises • Installation for Beam Test • Planned to install in ITS by end of month • 3 BPM Test • Planned installation mid to late summer • Schedule • Still considered an undulator system critical path item

  10. Beam Finder Wire (See Walter’s Talk) • Excellent Progress • Testing of positioning • Excellent results • 5 micron repeatability • Expect Prototype • Mid Summer

  11. OTR S1 • Location • Near beam dump after analyzing magnet at 135 MeV point in linac • Performance • Similar to what ANL was designing for the undulator • Plan • Build what we had designed for phase I and test in operation • Improve design performance if warranted in the future

  12. Beam Loss Monitoring System • Basic concept established • Details, however, are not • Schedule • Not yet on critical path, but we clearly are falling behind on the plan • Plan • Get an appropriate engineer and physicist on this • This has proven difficult to maintain

  13. SLAC Work • Measurement Bench (See Wolf’s talk) • ANL bench on loan for development of overall production measurement and tuning plan • Prototype undulator at SLAC • Magnet Measurement Facility (See Wolf and Pope’s Talks) • Building construction completed • Equipment to move in in the coming weeks • This will be a busy place

  14. SLAC working closely with ANL The SUT will be used heavily in refining overall assembly sequence Component delivery Schedule and assemble being refined to match planned component arrivals This is already forcing us to optimize our effort planning to improve the arrival timing Assembly Planning (See Pope’s Talk)

  15. Summary • Things are getting exciting • Production undulators are starting to arrive and be measured • There is still much to be done • There are a few kinks we need to work out • Eg. The beam loss monitor work • We must keep our eye on some key items • BPMs • Vacuum Chambers • But we still believe we will meet all our critical milestones while not compromising performance
