Maths Session: Mental Starters & Calculations in Real-Life Contexts

Welcome to our Maths Session! Come and try our mental starters to recall number pairs and use patterns to calculate. We also introduce addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through concrete manipulatives and real-life problem solving. Suitable for Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2.

  1. Welcome to our Maths Session

  2. Have a go at our mental starters… • Recall your number pairs to 10 starting at 0 + 10 = 10? • If 5 + 4 = 9, use pattern to calculate 55 + 4 = or 555 + 4 = or 5555 + 44 = OR… If 5 x 4 = 20, what else do you know?

  3. Foundation Stage (Reception) • We begin with counting songs and games to introduce numbers and the concepts of adding and taking away. Language associated with these operations can develop into understanding repeated addition (multiplication) and repeated subtraction (division). • Maths resources (concrete manipulatives) are available in both indoor and outdoor areas for children to explore in their independent learning time. Familiarisation with these resources is important for later on. • Then, using real life contexts and practical methods, we begin teaching addition and subtraction. We use concrete manipulatives all the time to support calculation. Formal methods of recording calculations are also introduced where appropriate.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) • Calculation starts with concrete and pictorial representations… • It can also be done using number lines… progressing to empty number lines… • It can progress to informal written methods and a horizontal expanded method… • Calculation can also be done using pattern and known number facts… • Language associated with adding and subtracting develops into a more formal understanding of repeated addition (multiplication) and repeated subtraction (division). • All work is supported with concrete and visual representations and linked with real-life problem solving and reasoning.

Addition in KS2 (Yrs 3,4,5,6) • Empty number lines • Mental methods - partitioning the hundreds, tens and units • 2/3 digits mentally • Column addition (without bridging the ten, hundred) • Carrying • (Within this: Decimals, fractions, measures, perimeter etc) • Link more overtly made with multiplication • All supported with concrete and visual representations and linked with real-life problem solving and reasoning

  6. Subtraction in KS2 (Yrs 3,4,5,6) • Empty number lines – counting back • Empty number lines – counting on (difference) • Mental methods – partitioning the hundreds, tens and units (bridging or not bridging 10) • 2/3 digits mentally • Column subtraction (without bridging the ten/ hundred) • Column subtraction including using exchanging • Link more overtly made with division • All supported with concrete and visual representations and linked with real-life problem solving and reasoning.

  7. Multiplication in KS2 (Yrs 3,4,5,6) - Repeated addition using empty number lines • Throughout we continue to use concrete manipulatives and link to real-life problem-solving and reasoning
