  1. How can carbon dioxide emissions be reduced? Activities Read pg. 78 to 80AQA ES • Why do most environmental scientists believe that climate changeis now inevitable? • How long do most greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere? • Why is it not fair that people in LEDCs are going to suffer the worst consequences of global climate change? • Define the key term: carbon footprint. • What is the difference in a person’s ‘direct’ CO2 emissions and their ‘hidden’ ones. • Complete Activities 1bc and 2abc (pg. 79) • Make a copy of diagram C and give it suitable title. • Explain the idea of carbon taxes. • Complete practice paper question: • Qu. 4 Higher Tier (Specimen Paper).

  2. Carbon Footprints ………………. Most environmental scientists believe some change is inevitable but that it is possible that the extremes of change could be reduced if action is taken now. They urge individuals, industry and governments to consider their ‘carbon footprint’. EXTENSION Calculate your own family’s carbon footprint using the government’s footprint calculator at: http://carboncalculator.direct.gov.uk/index.html Review the following websites and give brief detail about how each website’s authors are proposing to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. http://www.co2capture.org.uk/- a good example of the technology proposed for carbon capture. http://www.statoil.com/en/TechnologyInnovation/ProtectingTheEnvironment/CarboncaptureAndStorage/Pages/CarbonDioxideInjectionSleipnerVest.aspx - gives details of the Sleipner project in Norway. http://www.carbon-offset-scotland.org/-details one tree planting scheme for carbon offsetting.
