CHARLOTTE HIGH – a tradition of excellence! • Received a school grade of A for 2011-12. • Five Cape/Career Academies – Agriculture, Drafting & Illustrative Design, Multimedia Design, Culinary Arts and Engineering Technology (2012-13) • Competitive VEX Robotics Team • 4 STEM Programs which include 2 NEW programs entitled Pathways to Engineering and Environmental Resources. • 16 Advanced placement courses , largest AP course offerings in the District • 6 Dual Enrollment courses on the campus, with availability of on-line dual enrollment offerings. • CHS is the only school in the district to become a Cambridge AICE school with 6 courses offered for the 13-14 school year.

Charlotte High has a GOLD certification by the USGBC as a LEED green school • ACT scores above the state average in all areas reported by ACT. • ACT scores reflect an increase in the percent of students satisfying college readiness scores. • SAT scores above the state mean in all reporting categories. • CHS administered the largest number of Advanced Placement exams in the history of the school with a total of 368 with a percent passing rate of 65%. • The percent of students who pass the AP exams who score a 3 or better has been above the state percent for the last 5 years. • CHS has scored within the top 10 schools in the state over the last three years based on percent passing AP exams at 3 or better. • CHS Athletic Programs have finished in the top 15 in the state for the past 10 years for overall athletic achievement.

Registration process • Pre-registration= Counselors meet with the students in a small group environment to introduce the process of registration and educate all students on where to find the career planning guide. Students are encouraged to talk with their current teachers to assist with correct levels of placement into selected courses. • Registration= Students meet one on one with their guidance counselor. The guidance counselor reviews credits earned, course grades and any requirements that are needed to get into special programs such as Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment. Students wishing to apply for acceptance to dual-enrollment programs at CTC can apply at this time. The course selection sheet is submitted to the guidance counselor for entry into the computer. The course selection represents “requests” for the 2012/13 school year. If a student does not have qualifying scores for a requested course, he/she will have the summer to attain the scores needed to take the course.

  12. Career academies • Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses are elective credits that can be taken in a sequence during your high school career. Advantages of taking courses within a career academy may include the following: • Courses can be taken in a sequence over four years. • Courses are designed to increase student engagement and improve enthusiasm and motivation for learning. • Courses can lead to the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. • Industry certifications may be earned along with a high school diploma. • The courses provide training in specific business and industry skills and are “hands-on” and college/career oriented.

CAREER ACADEMIES • Real-world activities are embedded in each program. • The integrated curriculum involves high level reading, math, and science skills. • Students have opportunities to become involved in the student organization related to the course, gain career and Technical Student Organizations are a great way to learn to work as a team; learn entrepreneurship skills, and compete at local, regional, state, and national events. • Career academies offer 3-4 years within the same career cluster • Students may culminate their experiences with an internship or paid on-the-job training. • Students may enroll in related dual enrolment programs offered through the Charlotte Technical Center (CTC).

Environmental resources • This STEM course was developed as a core and is designed to develop competencies in the areas of agricultural biotechnology in agriculture, scientific investigation, laboratory safety, scientific and technological concepts; and the fundamentals of biotechnology. Students will develop competencies in the areas of water resources, native flora and fauna, Florida ecosystems, soil characteristics, and collecting, recording and analyzing data. Additionally, the students will use technology to scientifically explore and mathematics to understand and make predictions about our environmental resources. These include completing the following: • • Collect and test samples used to determine soil characteristics. • • Determine the quality and quantity of water resources. • • Identify, classify and preserve samples and specimens of native flora and fauna. • • Identify major ecosystems in Florida. • • Collect record and analyze data. • • Demonstrate orienteering and map reading skills. • • Research environmental issues

  17. COLLEGE READINESS ALL MATH SCORES ABOVE QUALIFY STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE ALGEBRA CHARLOTTE HIGH WILL ADMINISTER THE POST EDUCATION READINESS TEST DURING THE 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR TO ALL JUNIORS WHO SCORE A LEVEL 2 OR 3 IN READING.

COLLEGE READINESS • HOUSE BILL 1255 • “It is expected that courses aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness Competencies should be offered in all high schools by 2012-13.” • PURPOSE • The purpose of the postsecondary preparation instruction is to prepare students for entry level college credit courses as well as gainful employment. • POST EDUCATION READINESS TEST (PERT) • Students scoring below the “college ready” score must complete • postsecondary preparatory instruction aligned with the Postsecondary Readiness • Competencies during their senior year.

Digital learning bill • House Bill 7197 DIGITAL LEARNING - .5 (half credit) • The bill also requires students entering the ninth grade in 2011-12 and beyond (rising juniors) to complete at least one online course to meet graduation requirements and that all statewide end-of-course assessments be administered online by the 2014-15 school year. • This can be done through a variety of on-line learning options such as Florida Virtual School, Edison Dual Enrollment, Charlotte Virtual School and Stars Suites. • Please refer to page. 83 of career planning guide for list of courses.

QUESTIONS MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED • How will tech center students get registration info? • Those students who are interested in the career and technical center programs will complete an online application when they meet with their guidance counselor in the classroom. The student needs to be on track with graduation requirements and have a good attendance record at their home school. CTC will review all applications and notify student and home school of acceptance.

  21. Questions most frequently asked • How do I find out more information about a particular class or program? • Go online to access the course description section of the catalog. The most up to date guide will be online.

  22. Questions most frequently asked • Is a foreign language required? • Not for graduation. Foreign language courses count as elective credits toward graduation requirements. Two years of the same foreign language are required for admission into the state university system. Some schools will require 3 years. Please familiarize yourself with the requirements of the college you may be interested in applying to.

  23. Questions most frequently asked • What happens if my child does not pass the Algebra I EOC? • Students will be provided a course for remediation during the school day and will be included in every re-take session which includes a winter and summer administration until the test is passed.

Questions most frequently asked • What happens if my child is not on track with graduation requirements and state assessments? • The guidance counselor will advise the student to participate in our Ed Options program (afterschool) and will look at possible remedial courses within the school day that will assist with remediation in preparation for re-taking state assessments. Charlotte/Florida virtual school may also be a possibility.

Honors program at charlotte High • Offers a wide selection of Advanced Placement (AP), dual enrollment and honors level courses. • Courses are rigorous and focus on critical thinking, analytical research, writing and reading comprehension skills. • Caters to students who are intrinsically motivated to become life-long learners. • A successful student in the honors program is able to meet deadlines, is able to make a commitment to additional hours of study outside the classroom environment and self-motivated to be an outstanding academic student. • Excellent attendance is necessary to be successful in all honors level courses. • The courses taken within the honors level program serve as an educational bridge for post-secondary institutions

Honors program eligibility requirements • The term “honors” refers to honors, AICE, dual enrollment and advanced placement. • Un-weighted overall GPA of 3.0 or better in all core courses (math, science, language arts, and social studies) • A grade of B or higher in the prerequisite course • Required entrance scores for Dual Enrollment courses in ACT, SAT or PERT • FCAT score of 4 or above in reading AND/OR math as requested by academic program • Successful completion of all applicable End of Course (EOC) exams • * Primary placement into these courses is based on student request and qualifying data. Students will be required to complete an honors program academic contract during registration

Accelerated academic comparisons • CHARLOTTE HIGH OFFERS THE FOLLOWING ACCELERATED PROGRAMS TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION: • HONORS • DUAL ENROLLMENT • ADVANCED PLACEMENT • AICE • NOTE: A SPECIAL PERT ADMINISTRATION WILL BE ARRANGED FOR RISING GRADE 11 STUDENTS WHO WISH TO TAKE DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES IN THE FALL AT CHS. EDISON COLLEGE WILL COME TO CHARLOTTE HIGH TO ADMINISTER THIS TEST.

Early admissions • This program is designed as an alternative plan for graduation for those seniors who have demonstrated through academic achievement and maturity the required ability and motivation to succeed in such an accelerated program. A Senior who meets the established requirements of the Early Admission Program may be admitted to the early admission program of any college or university in lieu of completing his/her senior year at high school. • A student interested in this program must discuss this option with their guidance counselor.
