  1. 5.1 Perimeter & Area Objectives: Define & use the perimeter, area, and postulates for sum of areas & areas of a rectangle. Warm-Up: Can you move 3 coins to flip this triangle upsideside down?

  2. Perimeter: The perimeter of a closed plane is the distance around the figure. Examples: Find the perimeter of each figure. 7 2 3 2.5 3 5 6 5

  3. HSPA question of the day: What is the perimeter of an equilateral triangle with one side measuring 3.5 inches? 22.25 10.5 1.05 105

  4. Area: The area of a closed plane figure is the number of non-overlaping squares of a given size that will exactly cover the interior of the figure. In the floor tile illustration at the right, there are 3 rows of tiles with 4 tiles in each row. You can find the number of tiles by multiplying. 3 x 4 = 12 Postulate: The Sum of Areas - If a figure is composed of non-overlapping regions A & B, then the area of the figure is the sum of the areas of regions A & B.

  5. The Perimeter of a Rectangle The perimeter of a rectangle with base b and heighthis given by: P = 2b + 2h Postulate: Area of a Rectangle The perimeter of a rectangle with base b and heighthis given by: A = bh

  6. Examples: Find the perimeter & area of the figure below. 4 2 2.5 1.5 2 1.5 5

  7. Examples: Find the indicated perimeter & areas. AD = 15 AC = 13 BD = 10 DL = 11 EI = 3 CH = 4 Perimeter of ADLI B D A C Area of ADLI Perimeter of CDLK Area of CDLK G H Perimeter of GHCDLJ Area of GHCDLJ F E Perimeter of BCHG Area of BCHG I L K J Area of BHG Area of ADI

  8. Examples: Find area of the rectangle with the vertices are the given points. (0,0) (0,2) (5,0) (5,2) (3,1) (3,7) (9,1) (9,7) (-2,-5) (-2,3) (4,-5) (4,-3) (0,0) (3,3) (6,0) (3,-3)
