PIGEONS IN THE WARS • During World War II ,a factory in Monmouth, New Jersey made parachutes for pigeons to enable them to be dropped into France. • In the world wars ,flying pilots carried pigeons in case they had to ditch their plane, they would release the bird for help. Many pilots owe their lives to a pigeon.
DOGS • Some dogs also carried pigeons in small pouches on their back. After the dog delivered the message, a soldier would write a reply . The reply was attached to the pigeon that then flew back to home base.
TRAINING IN ACTION • Pigeons were trained to fly at night at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. • They also trained pigeons to fly 2 ways or make a round trip.

How Long Was the War • To begin with the war took place from 1914 to 1918.

Where Was it Fought? • The war took place in Europe on 2 fronts. • The Eastern Front was in Russia and the Western Front was along the French German border.
How the War Was Fought? • This war was fought in the trenches dug along each front.
This is a picture of trenches in the war. Why did it began • In addition World War I started for many reasons. • It began with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand who was to become king of Austria Hungary, that the war began. • 25 years later, World War II began.
Conclusion • So you can see World War I was not a war to end all wars.

Who is Cher Ami? • Cher Ami was a grey and black checkered cock. • He was a great homing pigeon. • He was given to the army in 1917.
Cher Ami Cher Ami means “Dear Friend”.
What Happened? • It was the fall of October 4, 1918 during World War I. In the Argonne Forest, France, the 77th Infantry Division was surrounded by Germans while being bombed by Americans. Cher Ami was the last pigeon the battalion had. Since they had no radio contact Cher Ami was their last hope.
His Rough Flight • Cher Ami flew 25 miles in 25 minutes. • He flew through heavy enemy fire. Cher Ami was wounded, but he was determined to finish his mission. • When he returned to his loft, he had no eye and his leg carrying the important message was almost gone and he had been shot in the chest
Cher Ami’s Arrival • When Cher Ami arrived he was wounded in the torso and the leg with the message on it. • Shortly after his arrival the bombing had stopped. Cher Ami had saved over 200 lives.
The Medal Awarded to Cher Ami • Cher Ami was awarded the French Croix de Guerre, a medal of bravery.
A Year After • In the year of 1919, a year after Cher Ami’s big mission he died from the many wounds he had suffered.

Where Is He Now? President Wilson may be seen today in the Smithsonian Museum of History in Washington, D.C.
What happened? President Wilson saved many lives of American Infantry men who were surrounded by the enemy. Carrying an important message, President Wilson was severely injured by enemy fire. He flew through heavy fog, and did not stop until he reached his loft. He fell limp and exhausted. He reached the loft at Ramport after flying 24 miles in 25 min. that means he flew 57 mph. while he was badly hurt.

THE PASSION FOR THE COUNTRY • SPIKE IS VERY COOL. HE DIED ON APRIL 11, 1935.
"Spike" was born in January 1918. He flew 50 missions and was never injured. Spike died on April 11, 1935. HE WILL BE KNOWN FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN SEE HIM IN THE COMMUNICATIONS-ELECTRONICS MUSEUM AT FT. MONMOUTH, NJ.
