  2. Detente • Détente is the period of relaxation during the cold war • The 3 major Powers: China, USSR, and the U.S wanted Détente • They feared there would be a nuclear holocaust • Attempted to ease tension with Salt 1 and Salt 2

Strategic Arms Limitation Talks(SALT 1) • Talks between U.S and Soviet Union about armament control. • Signed in Moscow by Nixon and Brezhnev • The ABM treaty allowed 100 anti-ballistic missiles • Some were to protect the capital city and some were to protect nuclear missiles • The Interim Treaty was used put limits on the number of missiles the U.S and USSR could have.

  4. SALT 1 Cont. • USSR: 1618 ICBM’s and 740 SLBM’s • U.S: 1054 ICBM’s and 740 SLBM’s • The Basic Principles Agreement were rules of conduct of nuclear warfare • The U.S and USSR had to promise to do there best to avoid military confrontation • Salt 1 was to lasted from November 1969-May 1972

SALT 2 • Signed in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter and Leonid Brezhnev. • Salt 2 cleaned up the issues left from Salt 1 • The treaty established so the U.S and the Soviets had the same number of nuclear weapon delivery systems • It limited the amount of MIRV’s (Missiles with multiple independent nuclear warheads)

SALT 2 Cont. • The U.S believed the treaty was an advantage to the soviets • The treaty made the U.S vulnerable to weapons not mentioned in the treaty • The Soviets invaded Afghanistan and found out the U.S Senate never ratified Salt II. • The Reagan Administration accused the Soviets of violating the pact and withdrew Salt II. • They later had the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START)
