Richard Nixon Blows Up • Richard Nixon was responsible for reestablishing relations between the US and China… • But his presidency was destroyed by the… • Watergate scandal… • Wherein members of his reelection committee were caught breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee… • Impeachment proceedings were started… • But resigned before being removed… • And was pardoned by this successor, Gerald Ford.

  4. The Supreme Court Ignites Controversy • In the 1970’s, the US Supreme Court issued two of its most controversial decisions: • Roe v. Wade… • Legalized abortion in the United States… • And University of California v. Bakke… • Allowed that minorities could be admitted to universities… • Under lower standards than white students.

Jimmy Carter is Elected • Carter was the first president elected from the deep south since 1848… • His presidency suffered from his perceived mishandling of the… • Iranian Revolution and the subsequent hostage crisis… • Where US embassy workers were held hostage in Iran for 444 days… • And during which several members of the US Special Forces died in a botched rescue attempt… • He was defeated in the 1980 election by… • Ronald Reagan.

Ronald Reagan is Elected • Reagan’s presidency was notable for REAGANOMICS… • And economic recovery plan that was focused on… • TAX CUTS. • His commitment to sharply increased funding for the US military is thought to have quickened the collapse of the Soviet Union… • And his presidency barely survived the Iran-Contra scandal… • During which the CIA sold arms to Iran… • In exchange for hostages and money… • And then used the money to fund anti-communist guerrillas in Nicaragua.

Bill Clinton is Elected • Bill Clinton, a Democrat, was often able to find common-ground with the Republican-controlled Congress… • And during his presidency, NAFTA— • The North American Free Trade Agreement—was established… • Which eliminated tariffs between the US, Canada and Mexico. • However, his Presidency was greatly damaged after it became evident that he had lied under oath about an extramarital affair… • Upon which he was impeached… • But not convicted, so not removed from office.

Bush is Elected • In the 2000 election, Democratic candidate Al Gore won the POPULAR VOTE… • But lost in the electoral college— • Wherein Bush won more states. • Early in Bush’s presidency, the US suffered the attacks of 9-11-01… • Which led to the outbreak of the War on Terror… • The invasion of Afghanistan to remove the Taliban… • And the invasion of Iraq to remove dictator Saddam Hussein.

The Afghanistan War • On September 11, 2001, a group of terrorists (most of whom were from Saudi Arabia)… • Hijacked four passenger jets, crashing one of them into a field in Pennsylvania… • One into the Pentagon, and one into each of the Twin Towers. • Al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization led by Osama bin Laden, claimed responsibility. • Because the Afghanistan government (called the Taliban) had been sheltering Al Qaeda… • The Bush administration launched an attack on that country with the goal of changing its government. • Although initially successful, the US has now been in Afghanistan for ten years… • And the Taliban has retaken more than 50% of the country.

The Iraq War • In May of 2003, under the mistaken belief that Iraqi president Saddam Hussein had an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction… • President Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq. • Saddam’s government was quicklyoverthrown… • No weapons of mass destruction were found… • And an extremely violent insurgency began resisting US occupation. • Approximately4500 Americans have been killed… • Estimates of Iraqi deaths range from 40,000 to more than 1 million.
