  2. The patrimony of Italian livestock is extraordinarily rich in indigenous races and populations of domestic animals whose origins can be traced back to the country's various regions. The enormous variety in Italy's climate, from the valleys of the Alps, to the sun-drenched plains of Southern Italy, and the multiple populations that made the Italian peninsula their home over the past millenia, have all contributed to this enviable genetic variety that is practically peerless in the rest of the world. However, beginning in the 1950's, Italy progressively diminished the raising of some indigenous and local races, sometimes even ceasing to do so altogether. In the last few years, thanks to breeders' increased awareness, the safeguarding of local races threatened with extinction has become a cornerstone of agricultural development policies.  Grey alpine bull

  3. Just as in many other countries, since after the Second World War, cattle breeding in Italy has seen the rise of a few cosmopolitan breeds that are very highly specialized. Among cows raised for milk production in Italy, three foreign breeds produce over 90% of the officially controlled production, while the remaining share is produced by around 20 indigenous breeds. The situation in the meat market offers 6 specialized indigenous breeds in this production area (Piedmontese, Maremmana, Chianina, Marchigiana, Romagnola and Podolica) , but there’s a growing competition from foreign breeds and markets. During the past years we have seen a growing interest in many indigenous Italian breeds, especially in hilly and mountainous farms where they have been proven to be more adaptable to the habitat , thanks to their ability to graze in poor fields or pastures.

  4. The Piedmontese seems to have a very antique origin. From archaeological findings, rock inscriptions and fossil remnants, the antique history of the breed has been traced back. In the period between the medium and superior Palaeolithic, about 25.000-30.000 years ago, another ethnic group penetrated massively into the Piedmontese territory and mixed with the pre-existent one, forming a new breed that showed the clear characteristics of the present Piedmontese. This breed was the Zebu, which originated in West-Pakistan.   5. The Piedmontese cow has very fine bones, a fine and elastic skin, a low quantity of external fat and lean and tender, but tasty meat. The Piemontese is a long-living breed that adapts very well to many different climates and that can be bred as easily in a confined rearing system as in an open herding or a semi-open herding system. The Piemontese cow can be bred favourably not only on plane and hill pastures but also on mountain pastures.
