  1. Welcome to NPE’s Title I Reading Program

  2. How did my child qualify for reading support? • Based on universal screening results • AIMSweb • Letter Naming Fluency • Letter Sound Fluency • Phoneme Segmentation Fluency • Nonsense Word Fluency • Developmental Spelling Assessment • Reading Street Baseline Group Test • Dolch Words

  3. Focus • Phonics - Project Read Program or Orton Gillingham Program • Dolch Word Recognition - Word Ring • Word Study/Spelling - Word Sorts

  4. Project Read & Orton • Multisensory approach (e.g. sand tray, felt paper, glue letters, skywriting, finger spelling) • Bonnie Kline Stories • Decodable Books to match unit materials

  5. Word Rings • Words come from Dolch Word List • 10 new words per week (can be modified as needed) • They are checked in class - 3 marks on the back and the word is “retired” • Memory Boxes

  6. Leveled Books • Practice Books on the weekends (one level lower for independent reading) • Sent home for 2 nights in a row for fluency & comprehension reinforcement

  7. Word Study - Sorts • Used to help students identify spelling and phonics patterns in words. • Assist in spelling instruction

  8. Fluency • The ability to read a text smoothly, easily, correctly, and at the right pace (accuracy, rate, and expression) • Allows reading to sound like speaking • The bridge between word recognition and comprehension • Necessary for enjoyable reading

  9. Homework • Students have HW each night • Usually consists of: • A book to read • Word/Phrase ring to practice • Finish a worksheet or sort from class • What do I do when HW takes too long or it is too difficult for my child that night?

  10. Parent Resources • Class Website - www.mrsthomasnpe.wikispaces.com • Classroom books, articles, and other materials • Classroom Newsletters • Appointments with me, as needed.

  11. Additional Student Resources Thank you for filling out your survey! • Raz-kids.com headsets & Tape Recorders • Extra reading books at your child’s level • Games • Books on tape
