  4. Definition Images of Apartheid • Policy of racial segregation formerly followed in South Africa • 1948-1990 • 4 groups of people • White • Bantu, or black Africans • Coloured, or people of mixed descent • Asians Apartheid

  5. Road Sign • Where people could live (blacks were separated into different “townships”) • Jobs they could hold • Education they could receive The Laws of Apartheid Determined…

  6. Pass laws: All blacks had to carry pass books that were used to control their employment and free movement • Laws authorized segregated public facilities • Denied any representation of nonwhites in the national government Laws also determined….

Sharpeville Massacre The ANC • 1960 • Peaceful demonstration vs. pass laws • 200 people shot (most in the back) • Turned the ANC to violence (not peaceful protest) • African National Congress • S.A.’s main black political organization • Banned until 1990, the primary goal through the years has been the end of the apartheid system and the establishment of a democratic, nonracial South Africa.
