  1. WELCOME YC Faculty Association

  2. Faculty participation in the management of the college. • An environment that fosters meaningful faculty input in management decisions involving curriculum, standards of instruction, scheduling and delivery, academic policies, granting of degrees, those aspects of student life which relate to the educational process and matters relating to faculty employment and welfare.

  4. Shared Governance • Shared governance…is a delicate balance between faculty and staff participation in planning and decision-making processes, on the one hand, and administrative accountability on the other. • "Shared" doesn't mean that every constituency gets to participate at every stage. Nor does it mean that any constituency exercises complete control over the process. •  True shared governance attempts to balance maximum participation in decision making with clear accountability. Genuine shared governance gives voice (but not necessarily ultimate authority) to concerns common to all constituencies as well as to issues unique to specific groups. • The key to genuine shared governance is broad and unending communication. Exactly What Is 'Shared Governance'?, Gary Olsen, Chronicle of “Higher Ed., July 23, 2009 http://chronicle.com/article/Exactly-What-Is-Shared/47065/

  7. Tangible benefits of AAUP membership • Provided the framework for our approved Statement of Understanding on Shared Governance • Helped articulate our position on Peer Review • Provided a working model that we are proposing to provide faculty input into the YC budgeting process • Provided clarification and models that the original faculty handbook committee used to initiate that product. • Reviewed and provided valuable feedback when we initiated a substantial change to the grievance policy.

  8. Tangible benefits of AAUP membership • Provides ongoing training via conferences that we have sent faculty to for the past several years. • Provides valuable web resources pertaining to policies, procedures, and best practices that all faculty have access to. • Provides solid recognition that we are part of a larger, national organization with substantial resources available to help chapters and individual members. The censure function alone is a valuable resource in our dealings with Adm. • Has helped individual YC faculty members in personnel disputes.
