  2. Background • First Intake for the Power Engineering Program was in 1996 • To address industry’s need to have qualified Power Engineers

  3. Power Engineering Career

  4. P.E. Qualifications • A power engineer is certified through the Alberta Boilers Safety Association(ABSA) as a 5th,4th,3rd2nd,1st (first being the highest.) • To work as a power engineer in the oil sands industry, a person must have at least fourth class power engineering certification & preferably a third class designation.

  5. Labour Market Alberta Power Engineers are expected to be in high demand in the next few years. One study reported that between 2006 and 2020, over 5,000 new plant and facility operators will be needed in the oil sands. Recently, there have been as many as 80 job postings for process operators and power engineers, so there is great opportunity in Wood Buffalo for this occupation.

Power Engineer There are two levels of power engineers in Fort McMurray: field operators and control room operators. “Primarily when someone is starting out, they’re in the field,” “After a few years they can progress to being a board or control room operator- kind of like the team lead. They direct the field people to perform tasks beyond the control of the DCS - turning valves, adjusting an instrument to control temperature, pressure, flow, or level.”

Power Engineer • Within the two year program you will obtain: • 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate • 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate • Two - 6-month paid work practicums with industry • Eligible to challenge the 4th Class - ABSA Exams after completing the 4th Class Theory • (ABSA Certification is contingent on completing six months firing time)

  10. Power Engineer • Schedule • First year • 17 weeks in-class theory • 6 month paid work term (if eligible) • Second year • 17 weeks in-class theory • 6 month paid work term (if eligible)

Power Engineer • Program Delivery • Full-time day program • Monday – Friday 30 hours per week in class • Attendance required • Work-Terms • Work Terms are Competitive and are NOT GUARANTEED • Based on successful completion of course and ABSA exams • Great job opportunities for successful students • Industry standard work term eligibility criteria is in effect

  12. Power Engineer Companies Providing Work Practicums • Provide PAID work practicum to those who qualify • Ensure students receive appropriate “steam time” • Agreement regarding hiring • Industry Interview • Medical, Physical Demand, and Drug and Alcohol testing prior to work practicum

  21. The Interview Key Points for a Successful Interview • Know what the job duties of a power engineer are? • Research what the company does. • What type of equipment and process they use. • Why you want to work for the company. • Demonstrate good written, verbal communication skills.
