You will: learn the stages of language development consider the importance of social interaction and development of communication skills explore the beginnings of reading and writing evaluate the theories of acquisition and their role in understanding how children acquire language

Sounds (phonology)  words (lexis)  formation of sentences (syntax) The Pre-Verbal Stage

The stages of development are just guides/generalisations. Children do not automatically mature into the next stage as they reach a particular age. You need to be aware of this, and avoid being judgemental when you approach data.

  7. Homework Task: due Friday 11th September Objective: To revise grammar in order to be able to interrogate the grammar use of children acquiring language. Task: Select 3 sentences from anywhere (back of cereal packet; dvd case; favourite book; favourite song) and stylistically analyse them (at least one sentence must not be ‘simple’). E.g. (from ‘Winnie the Pooh’) ‘Eeyore frisked about the forest. ‘
