Adding Fractions 5 3 1 7 + = 6 4 12 • When you add fractions you must have a common denominator. • Find the Least Common Denominator the same way you found the LCM when you compared fractions. • Example of LCM: • 4 – 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32,…. • 6 – 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36……. 10 9 5 x 2 3 x 3 + +  becomes 12 12 6 x 2 4 x 3

  3. Adding Fractions 10 9 + 12 12 • ONLY add numerators. Keep denominators same. 10 9 19 + = This is a IMPROPER FRACTION, which means numerator is bigger than denominator. 12 12 12 To simplify answer, we must change improper fraction to a mixed number. A mixed number is a whole # with a fraction. 1 7 12

  4. Subtracting Fractions • Follow same LCD rules. Subtract numerators. Keep same common denominators. Follow same simplifying rules as addition. • 3 – 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 • 5 – 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 2 1 - = 3 5 2 x 5 1 x 3 10 3 7 - = - = 3 x 5 5 x 3 15 15 15 Answer in simplest form. CAN NOT divide either numerator or denominator by a common factor.
