  2. The Calculator • The calculator is great; if you know how to use it. We’re going to review some of the important functions you will use during this course.

  3. The Calculator - Fractions • How would you enter “one-half plus two-thirds?” • How do you make your answer a fraction again? ALWAYS put each fraction in a set of PARENTHESIS!!

  4. The Calculator - Exponents • How would you type in “5 squared?” • How would you type in “2 to the fifth?” • What is “3 to the -1?” • Type in “105 to the 15th.” What does your answer mean?

  7. The Calculator - Pi • Instead of using 3.14 for pi, you need to use the pi button. Can you find it? • Why is it important to use the pi button rather than 3.14?

  8. The Calculator - Factorial • Do you remember what the factorial symbol is? • What does it mean? Try these: 7! 8! - 2! 6!/3!

  9. Estimation • Calculators are great to get exact answers to questions. • Sometimes, they actually take too long to give us an answer. (During the ACT) • If you do not need an exact answer, you can estimate to get an appropriate answer to a question.

  11. Birdhouses A birdhouse can accommodate up to 8 nests. How many birdhouses would be necessary to accommodate 58 nests?

  12. Rushing Yards Per Game In 2004, Tiki Barber of the New York Giants carried the football 322 times for 1518 yards. Approximate his average number of yards per carry.

  13. People Per Square Mile Buffalo County in Nebraska has a population of 40,249 and covers 968 square miles. About how many people per square mile live in Buffalo County?

  14. Farm Workers In a recent year, there were approximately 127,000 males in the 25-29 year age bracket working on farms. This represented part of the total of 238,000 workers in that age group. Of the 331,000 workers in the 40-44 year age group, 160,000 were males. Which age bracket had a larger proportion of males?

  15. Interpreting Graphs • Graphs are an efficient way of transmitting information in a concise way. • The most common graphs are circle graphs (or pie charts), bar graphs, and line graphs. • You can see these graphs in any magazine or newspaper.
