    3. Journal: Thursday, September 29th, 2011 Why do you think the Ancient Egyptian civilization is considered one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world? Explain your answer fully.

    4. Middle Kingdom 2055-1650 B.C. “Golden Age of Stability” Period of Expansion- conquered Nubia, traders sent into Africa and Fertile Crescent Pharaoh- public works, becoming one of the people No pyramids- built desert tombs

    5. Hykos Middle Kingdom invaded by Hykos Used horse drawn carriages and easily defeated the Egyptians Ruled for 100 years teaching the Egyptians Learned bronze working, mastered military skills Egyptians drove out Hykos and reunited Egypt

    6. New Kingdom 1550-1070 B.C. Creation of an empire Very Powerful! New social order- women gain more freedom Amenhotep IV and Queen Nefertiti- introduced monotheism to Egypt Closed all other temples After death, Egypt went back to multiple gods and re-opened the temples- Tutankhamen

    7. New Kingdom Rulers Hatshepsut- woman pharaoh, built great temple Led the army, sent off traders to distant lands Ramses II- regained control of Asian territory Last great pharaoh Statues still stand all over Egypt in his honor

    10. Decline of Egypt Loss of territory Invasions- Hitties (use of iron weapons) Next 1,000 years dominated by multiple groups Kush people of old Nubia Assyrian invasion (Middle East) 332 B.C. Alexander the Great conquered 1st Century B.C.- Queen Cleopatra Tried to reestablish Egypt’s independence Failed- Egypt became a province of Rome

    11. Social Structure Pharaoh Nobles/priests Merchants/scribes Farmers Slaves

    12. Culture Positive outlook to life Women had access to property and inheritance Very close families Clothing White, wrapped cloth Used makeup Wore jewelry Belief that jewelry was a form of protection

    14. Accomplishments Hieroglyphic- complex system of writing that used pictures, used in temple walls Hieratic script- simplified version of hieroglyphics, used in daily life Papyrus- paper made from papyrus reed

    15. Knowledge of Egyptians Architecture- use of mathematics for building Astronomy Mathematics- pyramids Medical- Mummification- embalming, preserving the dead body from decay Bandages, splints, treatment of disease

    17. What did they leave behind? Rosetta Stone- tablet with writings in Greek, Hieroglyphics and demotic, discovered in 1799 Literature- songs, poetry, and prayers helped archeologists to translate their work Architecture- obelisks Mathematics

    19. Picture Timeline Ms. Hunt will give each student a timeline sheet. Blank copy paper For each kingdom (Old, Middle, and New)… Write a 3 sentence description of the kingdom and… Draw 1 image that would capture the idea of that kingdom. The timeline must be colored and all sentences must contain correct spelling and proper grammar. Your timeline is due at the end of class!
