  2. Simile • Using like or as to compare two things. • My dad is blind as a bat.

  3. Metaphor • Comparing two things without using like or as; something is something else. • My sister is a swelled airhead. • My dumb sister is a rock.

  4. Hyperbole • Using exaggeration to make a point. • My grandmother is older than the hills.

  5. Onomatopeia • Sound word. • The deer splashed through the creek.

  6. Alliteration • Repetition of beginning sounds. • The frog flopped in the forest.

  7. Personification • Giving human qualities to something not human. • The spider web danced in the breeze.

  8. Idiom • A well known expression that does not mean what it says. • She’s going to get a taste of her own medicine.

  9. Practice problems • The snow smiled at me. • Caged emotions are hard to handle. • The ant ate the apple in the afternoon. • My sister is as dumb as a post. • My dad sleeps so good he could sleep through a hurricane. • My mom is busy as a bee. • Mrs. Moore was popping her gum.
