  1. Presentation Topic;Digestive system of Insect

  2. Digestive system • It consist of the elimentary canal and the associated glands which help in digestion. • The elimentary canal extend from mouth to the Anus. Digestive system of insect differentiated into 3 main Region. • Foregut(stomodaeum) • Midgut(mesenteron, ventriculus or stomach) • Hindgut (proctodaeum or intestine)

  3. Foregut • Foregut consist of Mouth (oral cavity), pharynx, oesophagus , crop and Gizzard(proventriculus). • Foregut start from mouth cavity into which open in salivary gland.

  4. Foregut Salivary gland • The gland are grape like cluster of circular acini which give their seceretion into two salivary duct. • Two salivary duct unite to form a common salivary duct which open below the hypo pharynx. • The mouth cavity anterior portion of the foregut, the pharynx. • The pharynx forms posteriorly a narrow and curved tube ,the oesophagus. • The oesophagus gradually widen behind to form the large crop which act as a food reservoir.

  5. The crop open into the gizzard. • Gizzard narrow posteriorly and and is not clearly differentiated form the former. • The gizzard is surrounded by the anterior lobes of the gastric caeca. • The junction of foregut and midgut is provided internally with a cardiac valve which regulates the passage of food

  6. Midgut • The midgutis comparatively a short cylindrical and straight tube. • At its anterior and arise six large, elongated sacs, the gastric caeca which are the evagination of its anterior end. • Each gestriccauecum consists of a longer anterior lobe and a shorter posterior lobe.

  7. The posterior lobe are filled with food where as the anterior lobe have only the secretary function. • The midguton its inner side has a very thin peritrophic membrane for the protection of its secretary cells from the friction of the food particles. • This permeable membrane also extends into the hindgut. • The Posterior end of the midgut is marked by the presence of malpighian tubules. • At the junction of the midgut and hindgut is a pyloric valve.

  8. Hindgut • The Hindgut is further differentiated into an ileum, colon and rectum. • The Ileum is a thick and straight tube which narrows posteriorly. • The Colon is a short and narrower tube which dilates posteriorly to merge into the rectum.

  9. The rectum is a wider tube which is extremely provided with six bands of longitudinal muscles alternating with six long rectal pads. • The rectum ends in an anal opening
