  3. Public Reaction to “The Raven” • The poem was an instant success • It is said to be the most famous poem ever written by an American poet • It became well known to the public after its publication in the Evening Mirror

  4. What was going on in Poe’s life at the time? • In 1844 Poe went to work for the Evening Mirror where he made 15 dollars a week • After, he went to the Broadway Journal where he became the sole editor • His wife Virginia Clemm was sick and on her death bed while “The Raven” was being published
