About Ms. Pearson • Graduated from NAU with my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Certificate, and Spanish Minor • Graduated in December 2017 from NAU with my Master’s in Elementary Education and a Reading K-8 Endorsement • Student taught in Kyrene at Esperanza • 3rd year at Monte Vista in 3rd grade!

  4. School Wide Expectations • 3B’s: Be safe, be respectful, be responsible • Students earn Honeydrops for showing these rules. When they earn 20, they can trade it in for a foam bee which then can be spent at the Beehive school store. • Family handbook is online. Please familiarize yourself with this as well as district and school policies

  5. Classroom Expectations • A clip chart will be used daily to reinforce positive expectations that are being followed as well as expectations that aren’t. • Green and above: the student is ready to learn and is showing good behavior. Honeydrops are awarded for this at the end of the day! • Yellow, orange, and red: the student has received multiple warnings for being off task. Consequences vary depending on the degree of the behavior. The student still has the opportunity to clip up after showing positive behavior continuously. • Communication will be frequent regarding behavior (positive/negative). Please talk with your child about their behavior daily and sign on the communication log.

Binders • Binders are for all communication between school and home • Send in lunch money in a bag with your child’s name on it • Binders should be kept clean daily with all papers staying at home except those needing to be returned. • Please check behavior log daily and discuss it with your child. Initial stating you know what color your child was on

  7. Communication • Graded papers are passed back within 1-2 days. Please review them with your child at home to see where mistakes may have gone wrong. • Praise them for doing well! • Any daily classwork not finished is sent home for homework. These will be stamped and need to be returned the next day for credit. • Weekly newsletters on Friday through email

  8. Homework • Reading • 20 minutes a night. This will increase your child’s fluency, comprehension and vocabulary • Math • Due on FRIDAY • Practice basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division • Spelling • Weekly spelling tests on Friday. How to help with Homework • Read with your child- Have your child read aloud to you and ask comprehension questions along the way. • Have them complete the math on their own first and then assist. There is a strategy sheet in their binder for help. • Provide a writing journal for your child to write daily prompts in

  10. We incorporate the following into our reading curriculum: Whole group listening/learning Small group instruction Literature studies (if time allows) Independent reading Partner reading Reading Curriculum

  11. CKLA- Core Knowledge Language Arts • Students will listen to a 45 minute read aloud daily with an activity that follows. • Each slide corresponds to a picture that students are shown. No text is in front of the child; this is to build their oral and listening comprehension skills which later meets their reading comprehension. • Each unit focuses on either science or social studies and the topic is studied for 3-4 weeks. An end the unit test is given which assesses their knowledge of the topic. Tests range from map skills, to true and false, short answers, and multiple choice.

CKLA Skills Strand Readers Grammar We focus on: parts of speech, prefixes and suffixes, sentence fragments, writing a topic and concluding sentence, subject and predicate, dictionary skills, alphabetizing words, building detailed sentences, pronouns, and superlative/comparative adjectives and adverbs. • Students are given a student reader that matches the same information presented in the read aloud. The readers get harder in Lexile level with each unit. A comprehension worksheet is given after reading the chapter. Writing • Opinion, Narrative, Informative • We use brainstorming maps to start the writing process. • We work up to a 5 paragraph essay with supporting our reasons, using transition words, and writing a strong opening and closing. Spelling • Spelling words are given weekly with a studied sound and the different spellings it can have. These words are then sorted on a test along with writing two oral sentences.

  17. Grading Scale • Proficient- 85-100% • Developing- 70-84% • Area of Concern- below 70% • You will receive quarterly report cards with your child’s progress • I will communicate with you as needed regarding progress if anything is of concern

Quarter 1 Goals • Mastering multiplication and building knowledge through strategies • Writing an opinion essay with The Wind in the Willows • Defining basic literary terms (plot, dialogue, narrative, theme) • Basic map skills • Building independence and responsibility- 3rd is a big step up from 2nd • Knowing it’s ok to make mistakes!

  19. AZ Merit • Your child will take AZ Merit at the end of 3rd grade in April. This is a state wide test that measures their understanding of the grade level standards

AZ Move on When Reading • AZ State law that states: • Any 3rd grade student who scores far below the 3rd grade level on the state adopted reading test WILL NOT be promoted to 4th grade. • Exceptions are ELL (students learning English, and Special Education students) • Your students progress will be monitored throughout the year. You will be notified by myself if there is any area of concern early on.
