  1. THE MUSCULOSKELETALSYSTEM Understanding How Your Body Works Gives YOU An Edge. Knowledge is Power!

  2. 1. WHAT TWO SUBSTANCES ARE REQUIRED IN ORDER FOR YOUR MUSCLES TO WORK? Oxygen and glycogen

  3. 2. While involved in exercise your body needs a plentiful supply of oxygen. IN ONE BREATH-WHAT IS THE APPROXIMATE CAPACITY OF YOUR LUNGS? Approximately: One Gallon

  4. 3. Bones are NOT permanent. Our skeletons are replaced every TWO years. One-third of our bones weight is made up of living tissue. HOWMANYBONES ARE IN THE HUMAN BODY? MORE OR LESS AS ONE GETS OLDER? EXPLAIN.

  5. The skeleton of an adult human is comprised of 206 bones. The skeleton of an infant contains 350 (the bones fuse together as you grow).

  6. 4. With 656 muscles in the body-almost 3-muscles to every 1-bone our muscles make up nearly ½ of our bodies weight. IDENTIFY THE THREE-TYPES OF MUSCLE IN YOUR BODY. • SKELETAL OR VOLUNTARY • Slow twitch – Fast twitch • SMOOTH OR INVOLUNTARY • CARDIAC

  7. Gives YOU your shape • Production of red blood cells • Protects major organs of the body • Provides attachment for muscle • 5. WHAT ARE FOUR FUNCTIONS (JOBS) OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM?

  8. 6. More than 70 percent of the energy that powers your muscles is lost as heat, causing your body temperature to RISE during exercise. HOW DOES YOUR BODY KEEP YOUR TEMPERATURE FROM RISING TOO HIGH?

  9. DURING EXERCISE, YOUR HEART BEATS VERY RAPIDLY TO PUMP BLOOD TO BRING OXYGEN TO YOUR MUSCLES and HOT BLOOD FROM THE MUSCLES TO THE SKIN WHERE THE HEAT CAN BE DISSIPATED. To keep your body temperature from rising too high, your heart pumps the heat in your blood from your muscles to your skin, YOU SWEAT AND IT EVAPORATES TO COOL YOUR BODY.

  10. While at PEAK PERFORMANCE the human body can work the equivalent of a 4 ½ horse powered engine. HOWEVER, UNLIKE A MANMADE MACHINE THE HUMAN MACHINE CAN IMPROVE WITH… EXERCISE
