  3. Requirements AcademicContent Standards Define what students are expected to know and be able to do (Science Teaching and Learning to Standards, p 12, 136 and 138)

  4. Requirements Benchmark Standard In science, a student’s academic progress can be checked at or about grades 3, 5, 8, and 10. (April 2009 - Science Standards Review and Revision)

  5. Requirements Eligible Content Statements related to the content standards that are eligible for inclusion in the statewide knowledge and skills assessment.

Requirements Please be aware that U.S. Department of Education requires that Oregon review its performance levels for all grades in the content areas of Mathematics, Reading/Literature and Science. These performance levels will be adopted by the State Board by February, 2007 and will be applied retroactively to all tests administered during the 2006-2007 school year. A school may therefore have more students designated as "Not Yet Met" after this review occurs.

Tools The Lexile Framework™ for Reading • An educational tool that links text and readers under a common metric-- Lexiles • Characterizes reader with a measure and text with a measure • Allows educators to forecast the level of comprehension a reader is expected to experience with a particular text

Tools Lexiles - Background • Founded in 1984 - focused on integrating assessment and instruction • All major norm reference tests are linked • Over 450 book publishers have titles with Lexile measures • Nearly 50,000* books to search at www.lexile.com • Over 70 million Lexiled articles through database-services partners

Tools Lexiles – Lexile Calculator • Forecasted Comprehension • The relationship between a reader and a text. • How well the reader will comprehend the material in the text. • Can perform the following calculations: • The rate at which a student is expected to comprehend the text. • The reading ability a reader is expected to need in order to comprehend the text at a specific level.

News 2007 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) • One exceptional Science Teacher per state • Teachers of grade 7-12 • $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation • Awardee and guest invited to national recognition events in Washington, D.C. • Awardees continue to network to improve teaching of science
