  2. Egyptian Gods • The Egyptians worshiped more than 1,000 different gods and goddesses • The gods were very important to the Egyptians • The gods often took the shape of animals and birds that the Egyptians saw around them

  3. Gods • The most important god of all was Amun Ra, the sun god • People believed that each night he was swallowed up by the sky goddness Nut. • The god looked like a man with a hawk head and headdress with a sun disk

  4. Osiris-Lord of the Underworld • Egyptians believed that when people died they travelled to a kingdom below earth, here Osiris and his wife Isis would protect the pharaoh • This god was a mummified man wearing a white cone-like headdress with feathers

  5. Thoth-God of writing • Egyptians often believed that hieroglyphic writing came from Thoth • This god often had the head of an ibis holding a writing palette, sometimes he was shown as a baboon

  6. Sekhmet-God of War • Sekhmet was a goddesses • The god looked like a woman with the head of a lioness

  7. Anubis-God of embalming and the dead • This god was in charge of preparing bodies to be mummified • This god is of a man with a jackal (dog) for a head

  8. Gods Lived in Temples • The gods lived in temples either as a statue or as a live animal. For example the city of Thebes worshiped a crocodile. • The statues and sacred animals were treated like princes; dressed in golden clothes and fed the best food • It was the priests duty to know what food the god liked and when they were happy or sad
