  1. Introduction to the Metadata Enterprise Resource Management Aid (MERMAid) Kathy Martinolich Jacqueline Mize NOAA National Coastal Data Development Center

  2. NCDDC Mission • “Provide access to coastal ecosystem data . . .” • Accomplished via the development and cataloging of • coastal metadata for data discovery & access • NCDDC seeks to facilitate the process of submitting • coastal metadata for cataloging • Data providers need a simple way to generate, validate • & manage their metadata • Metadata Enterprise Resource Management Aid

  3. MERMAid Technical Elements • Developed at NCDDC, MERMAid uses the framework • of NCDDC’s web application server, the • Z-Object Programming Environment (ZOPE) • Open-source • leverages outside resources • freely distributable • Utilizes an object-oriented database available in ZOPE • Offers secure, remote access through a web browser • (https://mermaid.ncddc.noaa.gov)

  4. MERMAid Capabilities • Generate FGDC Standard, Biological, and Shoreline Profile and Remote Sensing Extension Records • Supports Ecological Metadata Language (EML) • Enhanced validation / continuous validation • Import existing FGDC records in XML and TXT format • Export records in XML, TXT, HTML or MARCXML • via “save as” • Robust “Help” functions • - FGDC Standards & Workbook contents • Contents of records stored as generic objects in OODB • - Offers ease of crosswalk implementation

  5. MERMAid Management Features • Metadata provider can: • Organize metadata • Establish unlimited metadata databases • - Group records as needed • (by program, project, data type, personnel …) • Regulate workflow • - Establish manager & custodian roles & permissions • (Resource, Data Source and Database level) • - Monitor record status using knowledge-based • search capability (near future)

  6. More Management Features • Metadata provider can: • Store supplemental information associated • with a record or data set (documents, correspondence,…) • Operate as a standalone “in the field” • - Synchronize with central repository • via remote log-in • - “Back-up/restore” between independent • MERMAid systems

  7. MERMAid Continuing Development • Automate translation from FGDC to other standards • - Dublin Core, DIF, ISO, MarineXML, TransducerXML • Import / Export records in “batch” mode • Facilitate harvesting or exchange of large number of • records or data sets • Evaluate need for various custom extensions • NOAA, ESRI … • Direct access to controlled vocabulary databases • ITIS, GCMD, ASFA …
