  1. Digestive System By: Noah Peña, Albert Ordoñez, Rodolfo Rodriguez, and Sebastian Gallegos

  2. The Mouth The mouth is where digestion starts. When you put food in your mouth, the salivary gland releases saliva to start breaking down food. The saliva also lubricates food to make it easier to swallow.

  3. The Esophagus After the food is chewed and swallowed, it enters the pharynx. The pharynx is connected to esophagus and they both use muscles to bring the food down.

  4. The Stomach After the food is swallowed and pulled down the esophagus, it’s dropped into the stomach. The food usually remains in the stomach for approximately 2-4 hours. During this time, food is converted into a semifluid material called “chyme” by gastric juices produced by glands in the stomach.

  5. The Small Intestine When the food is brought from stomach to the small intestine, nutrients are absorbed through villi. These are small, finger-like tentacles that line the intestinal wall. The nutrients are then sent through your veins to your bloodstream.

  6. Large Intestine The large intestines takes the rest of the indigestible food from the small intestine and absorbs the water through more villi and transports the feces to the rectum to be extreted.

  7. Rectum The rectum is the final place for the digestive system. The feces and waste products are stored here until they are ejected through the anus.
