  1. Prepositions Relationships between nouns and another object

  2. Definition A preposition is a word that shows the relationship of a noun to another word. It can be a noun or a pronoun The noun/pronoun is called the ‘object of the preposition’

  3. Compound Prepositions A preposition that consists of two or more words is called a compound preposition.

  4. Example • Example sentence using a compound preposition: • The baseball game was cancelled because of rain. • Who is sitting in front of you?

  5. Preposition or Adverb? • To be sure that a word is used as a preposition, it must relate to a noun or pronoun to another word. • Look at the following examples: • The race car fell behind. • Jason’s pet cat fell behind the couch.

  6. Identify Prepositions Last week, my science class went on a field trip to the Natural Science Museum, 120 miles south of Oxford, where we go to school. Mr. Graham, our teacher, wanted us to practice naming the different trees outside of the classroom.

  7. Everyone was signed up to watch the iMax film on amphibians during the trip. We first went to the museum exhibit about dinosaurs and we saw colorful posters and 3D exhibits of carnivorous dinosaurs. John, Kim, and Christy ran around the museum and Mike fell in the alligator tank.

  8. Besides the museum, we also went to the mall, located in north Jackson near County Line Road. Later, we decided to go to Keifers, an awesome restaurant that began in the late 1970s. Before we returned home, our teachers told us not to act crazy or run into the street.

  9. We walked around the different stores and then went to the parking lot. While in the parking lot, a large car drove up and four men got out. Two of the men had baseball bats in their hands and the other two had MP5 submachine guns.

  10. “Give us your money! Put the money in the bag!” the men screamed. “Just don’t hurt us,” replied Maria. “You can have our money. And you can have her.” Maria turned around and pointed at Amayrani. On the way back home, we did not have much money, but we were glad that the ride up I-55 was very quiet.

  11. 15. Let us be thankful that we returned to Oxford alive. And always remember…ummm. What was the name of the girl that we left in Jackson?

  12. Use Appropriate Prepositions

Another type ___ teacher is the coach. This type ___ teacher mainly sleeps ___ class, pushes food ___ his mouth, and talks ____ sports or something else the students think is boring.

  16. Students do not like the grumpy type of teacher.
