  2. Key Concepts • Imperialism: a policy in which one country seeks to extend its authority by conquering other countries or by establishing economic and political dominance over other countries

  3. Four forms of colonial control • Colony – a country or a territory governed internally by a foreign power • Protectorate – a country or territory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power • Sphere of Influence – an area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment of trading privileges • Economic Influence – an independent but less-developed country controlled by private business interests rather than other governments

  5. Causes of Imperialism • Economic Causes • Natural Resources – needed to fuel the Industrial Revolution in Europe • New Markets – needed to sell the products produced during the Industrial Revolution

Causes of Imperialism • Political Causes • Powerful armies needed new ports and military bases • Major European powers competed for land to increase their power • Nationalism countries believed that they deserved to be the most powerful and wanted to compete with other nations • Large empires made countries world powers

Causes of Imperialism • Ideological Causes • Missionary wanted to spread Christianity • Spread culture and traditions to other nations • Western nations wanted to civilize “barbaric” nations (White Man’s Burden) • Social Darwinism the strong nations will survive and take over the weaker nations
