Assertiveness Training to Prevent Doorstep Crime

This project, called FIX, is a partnership between Hammersmith & Fulham CAB, London Plus Credit Union, and Urban Partnership Group. It offers assertiveness training for people aged 63+ to help them deal with unwanted doorstep callers and avoid falling victim to doorstep crime. The training teaches participants how to be assertive without being aggressive or confrontational, empowering them to make decisions and protect themselves from manipulation. The program also addresses the impact of fear on decision-making and provides strategies to confidently say "no" when necessary.

  1. FIX is a project supporting people aged 63+ and their support networks FIX is a partnership between Hammersmith & Fulham CAB, London Plus Credit Union and Urban Partnership Group

  2. What is this all about? Assertiveness training to help people deal with unwanted doorstep callers and avoid doorstep crime.

  3. What is assertiveness? Not about being loud, aggressive or bullying

  4. Non Assertive vs Aggressive The non assertive person gives everyone else their choice, even to their own detriment. The aggressive person makes all the decisions and manipulates others.

  5. Assertive The assertive person can make decisions and allows others to do so as well; they accept that both parties have the right to an opinion and a choice. The assertive person makes decisions free from manipulation.

  6. How fear makes us behave When people are angry or become afraid biological changes happen in the body including rerouting blood away from the brain and actually affects our ability to think. We do need fear as it helps us recognise or react to danger. However we want people to know how to respond without being overwhelmed by fear.

  7. How to say NO and mean it • Why is it difficult? • Why it may be necessary • Keep you from harm • Stop you being manipulated

  8. An effective way to say no is to repeat the request back to the person making it, explain reason for saying no and then say no.
