  2. BACKGROUND • DENOSA’S strategic plan - January 2007/11 • Six Key Performance Areas(KPA)defined • KPA: POLITICAL PARTICIPATION • STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE: Influence government policy on HIV and AIDS. South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative

  3. ACTIVITIES • Audit the availability of policies • Compile reports on available policies • Monitor implementation and compliance • Conduct research on the extent of HIV and AIDS • Improve quality of life through support systems e.g. C-SAN South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative

  4. C-SAN PROJECT South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative

  5. South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) 1 • Highest National Body on HIV and AIDS - Reporting to Cabinet • Under the Deputy President Leadership – Chair • Developed the National Strategic Plan NSP 2007/2011 - broad consultation with various sectors South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative

  6. South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) 2 • NSP serves to guide South Africa’s response to HIV/ AIDS & STI’s control • Health Professional sector (SAMA, PPSA, DENOSA) - SANAC • DENOSA represents the nurses in the country South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative

  7. CURRENT CHALLENGES • Attendance – Support groups • DENOSA’s contribution and role to NSP • Creating awareness among nurse leaders on NSP South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative

  8. OPPORTUNITIES • Raise awareness on HIV and AIDS: campaigns & seminars well received by facilities. • Opportunity to influence policy on HIV and AIDS through SANAC South Africa Nurses HIV-AIDS Initative
