  1. Daily Agenda Eng IV 6/19/13

  2. Bellwork • Take 5 minutes to respond to the quote. We will share after that. • For John…Solve World Hunger in 3 steps or less.

  3. Novel reading schedule • So we are going to have to adjust our scheduling of the reading and journals. • We will not have a journal for this first week. I ordered books yesterday and they will arrive tomorrow, but not in time for class. We will start reading on Monday. • 7/3: up to page 89 stopping after “his lips moving just a trifle”. Set one of double entry journals due. • 7/18: finish book pg. 89 – 158 (end of book). Set two of double entry journals due • SSR journals due: 6/27, 7/3, 7/11, and 7/18 (200 words each)

  4. Study Guide • The study guide will be a beginning point for class discussions. You will be required to answer the questions as you read the book. • I will be collecting them at the half-way point on 7/3 and at the end of the novel on 7/18.

  5. Censorship • One argument used by some people who wish to ban books is that the First Amendment doesn't specifically address the freedom to read. Read the following amendment and write a short response about what this amendment means to your life. • THE FIRST AMENDMENT: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  6. Censorship • Why would people ban or challenge books? • Who challenges books? • Look at the list of 100 top Banned and Challenged book. • Highlight the ones you have heard of • Put a star next to the ones you have read\

  7. Censorship • Write a journal response to this list answering the questions: What are your feelings on banning books? What do you think of the titles on this list being banned? Are there some that you think shouldn’t be on the list and why? What books do you think might be on the next list of banned books for 2010-2019?
