  3. Greek Geography: Past and Present Significance

  4. The Context of Greek Geography • Greece is surrounded by several large bodies of water due to it being a largely peninsula and island based nation. • Adriatic Sea- Northwest of Modern Greece - prominent area for Ancient Greece. • Ionian Sea- Southwest of both Modern and Ancient Greece. • Aegean Sea- Central sea in the middle of both Ancient and Modern Greece • All of these smaller seas are set in the larger Mediterranean Sea.

  5. The Regions of Greece • Thessaly- Has Mt. Olympus to the East - Central plain would sound useful but is not…How? • Central Greece/Boetia/Attica- Mountainous and most populated today- Thermopylae, Thebes, Delphi, Athens, Marathon are all in this region. • Peloponnese- Contains Olympia, Corinth, and Mycenae- Mix of mountains and plains. • Cyclades/Dodecanese- hundreds of smaller sized islands east of the mainland- South of this area is the larger island of Crete. • Macedonia/Thrace- Mountains & Plains- very diverse area- contains Thessaloniki.

  6. The Climate of Greece Geography • Temperate climate- a.k.a moderate changes in temperature between each season. • Cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. • However, mountainous regions can be more extreme (as we saw with the ARVC’s).

Ancient Greece and Geography • Lots of islands and mountains create LOTS of barriers… • How might this affect Greek Civilization? • Surrounded by sea and not focused on a river… • What opportunities open and is this a better option than what the ARVC’s had? • Limited land yet a growing population… • What kind of benefits and problems can arise from this?

Ancient Greece and Geography • The geography of Greece pushed Greek city-states (the product of a lot of natural barriers and divisions) into seeking alliances, new lands, and trading to survive. • Little farming on mass scales due to mountainous, rocky land even in plain areas ——> This pushed Greeks to only farm for themselves and seek other ways of surviving and thriving… • Colonies, alliances, and trade routes did two things. • Expand Greek influence in the Mediterranean area. • Diverse thoughts, ideas, resources, etc., are spread…for good and bad reasons. What are some?

Real World Connection: Modern Greece and its Geography • To put it simply… Greece in the middle part of the last decade got into a lot of debt while working with yet competing against other allied European countries as apart of the European Union. • How might Greek geography have adverse affects towards Greece in our modern day? Try comparing Greek lands to other lands like Germany, France, etc.

Real World Connection: Modern Greece and its Geography • Let's look back at our articles from the beginning of class! • If Greece behaves like other more capable European Union countries but cannot meet such lofty expectations by other countries and their citizens... • What are some solutions to this predicament? • Should Greece be left to fall down or should the country be assisted by people who are not directly associated with its problems?
