  2. History/Description of St Augustine • Founded in 1867 • This college was locate ten blocks east of the state capital. The college was founded in 1867,an out growth Christian missionary work in the Reconstruction-era South. • With Shaw University it established Raleigh as a center of educational opportunity for freedmen and over the years has graduated many of the region's most successful African Americans. • Affiliated with the Episcopal church, St Augustine’s started as a normal school an technical trade-similar program. The church later made longer it’s mission by establishing St Agnes Hospital and school for training nurses. • To provide medical care for and by African American's. Historically the school volunteered an anchor of African American neighbors. The evolving nature of the school is varied.

His name is Luther Barnes he graduated from St Augustine's College • Ralph Campbell Jr.former North Carolina’ State Auditor; the first African-American elected to that position in North Carolina • Anna Julia Cooper a writer and an educator, one of the first African American Women to get a PhD while attending the college. • Robert X Golphin -Actor of “The Great Debaters” • Ike Lassiter-the first American Professional Football player ever from St. Augustine's College
