  4. Grade 6 Content Description • 6th grade FCS focuses on family, babysitting and foods. We are all part of a family and your family is the biggest influence in your life. Understanding your family will help students identify roles and duties, cope with changes and build stronger relationships with family members. • Babysitting is usually a student’s first job. In the babysitting unit we will help students become better babysitters by discussing stages of child development, babysitting safety strategies and the responsibilities of babysitting. • The foods unit is an introduction to cooking and nutrition where students will learn beginning cooking skills including kitchen safety and sanitation, measuring, and cooking terminology. Students will also learn about MyPlate, the Dietary Guidelines and essential nutrients which will help you make healthier breakfast and snack food choices. You will apply your skills and knowledge through foods lab experiences in class.

Grade 7 Content Description • 7th grade FCS students will build on the knowledge and skills from 6th grade and utilize good personal hygiene and safe food handling techniques to successfully follow a recipe to create food products. Students will learn about portion control, nutrients and how to improve their food choices for optimal nutrition by analyzing foods for nutritional content. Students will apply their skills and knowledge through foods lab experiences in class. • In the consumer education portion of class, students will read and interpret food packages and labels, compare products and calculate unit pricing to determine best value of consumer goods. Students will also learn to exercise their consumer right to be heard by writing a complaint or compliment letter to a company of their choice.

  8. Grade 8 Elective FCS • Grade 8 - Elective Family and Consumer Science class helps students to learn the skills and tools necessary for meeting the challenges and responsibilities of life. A major focus of this course will be in the area foods and nutrition. Students will learn basic cooking methods that will give students the background to prepare a wide variety of culinary delights. Each food group is studied; recipes are chosen and prepared from each food group. Of course, home-made ice cream is one of the favorite foods labs. Students use research skills to learn about different cultures and cuisines, then prepare and taste foods from around the world. American regional cuisines are also explored, culminating with an all American buffet.
