Target #23- I can identify where the aerobic reactions of cellular respiration occur • After glycolysis, if oxygen is present, the Citric Acid Cycle and an Electron Transport Chain occurs • Occurs within the mitochondria • Citric Acid Cycle occurs in the matrix • The Electron Transport Chain occurs in the cristae, or the inner folds

Target #24- I can describe the steps of the Citric Acid cycle • Citric Acid Cycle: produces molecules that carry energy to the second part of cellular respiration (2 cycles per 1 glucose) • Step 1: the pyruvate from glycolysis is broken down with enzyme CoA • Creates Acetyl Co-A, and2 CO2 • Step 2: Acetyl Co-A combines with a 4-carbon molecule to make citric acid • 2 ATP is made, 2 CO2is released • Step 3: energy released is used to make several energy carrying molecules • 6 NADH and 2FADH2

  4. Target #25- I can describe the steps of the cellular respiration electron transport chain • Electron Transport Chain • Step 4: NADH and FADH2 transferred to an electron transport chain in the inner membrane of the mitochondria

Step 5: Electrons are released and travel through transport proteins called cytochrome molecules • Releases H+ ions into the cristae • H+ in the matrix and free floating O2 combine to form water molecules • Step 6: H+ ions in the cristae are pumped through to the matrix by an ATP synthase protein • Turns ADP into ATP • Known as chemiosmosis Target #25- cont

  6. Target #26- I can state how many total ATP are made during glycolysis and the aerobic reactions of cellular respiration • Total ATP made during glycolysis and the aerobic reactions of cellular respiration = 36
