Diversity in Congress 113th Congress is the most diverse in history. • 8 percent Black: a total of 43 • 6 percent Latino: a total of 32 • 5.6 percent Asian: a total of 30 • 18.9 percent women: a total of 101. • Four Arab Americans and one Caribbean American. • The first Buddhist senator • the first Hindu representative • the first Unitarian Universalist • the first openly gay senator • the first nonwhite LGBT • the first openly bisexual woman • Also includes one atheist

Shifting Demographics in the Electorate We talked about gerrymandering in the house polarizing the political leanings of those electing their representatives, but who is voting is also changing… • White populations will decrease drastically by the year 2030, from 71.6 percent to 46.3 percent, • Latino populations will increase significantly from 11.3 percent to 30.3 percent. • Asian populations will grow from 4.4 to 6.3 • Black populations will tick up from 12.8 percent to 12.9 percent.  What do you think the impact on legislative policy will be when these demographic shifts occur?

  6. Reflect: Individual • Did you achieve your aims? • What allowed you to achieve your goals or what prevented you from achieving your goals as a congressperson? • What was frustrating about the process? • What factors most impacted how the process went?

  7. Brainstorm What are the factors at play in the legislative process? What factors impacted our legislative simulation ?

  8. Essay- What are the factors at play in the legislative process? • Must discuss a minimum of three factors. • Please give an example of either something that happened in the simulation and/or a current event in the legislature to support your position. • One of those factors must be your outlining of the technical/legal process for making a bill into a law. • Discuss how the process impacts what bills are heard. • You must discuss whether or not YOU were successful in achieving the aims of your constituents/party – if not, why not? • You must include at least one current event in your evidence/explanations.
