  1. 24 June 2014 • Special Postal Executive • Hello and thanks for the invitation. We are: • Ben Abrams, Youth Committee and Leeds No 1 • Danielle Areola, Youth Committee and Midland No 7

  2. WE ASKED YOUNG POSTAL MEMBERS...... WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM?

  3. Jason Richards , SE Wales Amal

  4. 1.PART TIME/SHORT HOURS WORKING Not enough hours to pay the rent. So much overtime so often it should be built into contractual hours. Non-contractual overtime makes a work-life balance impossible. We want a campaign for regular overtime to be part of contractual hours.

  5. 2.RELEASE AND RESPECT Increasingly difficult to get release on any basis. No expectation of facility time, but too much annual leave being used. If Branch Youth Officers had an IR role too would help, but counter-productive to make it obligatory. Still some branches who don’t “get it”. Need a more joined-up approach to get Youth reps pushed into the mainstream.

  6. Heather Clough, Leeds No 1

  7. Heather is a new member, who for many years was very adverse to the union and what she perceived it stood for (old men, strike mongering) but was changed by the recent fight we won on terms and conditions and privatisation. We could have won her sooner had we advertised our successes!

  8. 3. WHAT’S THE CWU GOOD FOR? Not enough awareness of or knowledge about the union and what it does Prevailing view that it is just about conduct and grievances. Young people turned off by perception that it is all always about conflict. Need better promotion of union values, services and victories. Perhaps something like this....

  9. Thank you We are happy to take questions. The dialogue cannot end here.
