  3. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) Why re-visit what the Radar looks like on the Internet? • 40,000+ comments on RIDGE Version 1 • Only 5-10% of comments from the public • The remainder from Internal NWS and other meteorologist • DHS, FEMA, EM’s, etc…(Core Partners) would like WMS, WCS, WFS, etc… tie into our data with their GIS Software • The power users wanted everything if available • Most frequent questions from the public • Is it raining and which direction is it moving? • Do I have a watches and warnings in effect? • How much did it rain? • Where can I get past images (Archive)? • Aviation community requested Mosaic Echo Tops NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  4. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) How is RIDGE being used now and current WMS Services used? NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  5. Used at FEMAState EOC’s • Images can be quickly and easily ingested into a GIS system (desktop GIS, IMS, etc.) for multiple needs • Gif vs Tif • ~428KB vs ~2.3MB • Layers (overlays) can be added and/or changed easily • Click on the “GIS Users” link on the left menu to learn more Rita data from HGX used to create real-time impacts that were given to folks in charge of first responders GIS Servers can integrate the imagery and serve to users NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  6. http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/kmzgenerator.php GIS Applications of RIDGE • Import RIDGE and NWS Warnings into programs like Google Earth and ArcExplorer, NASA World Wind, Google Maps API, Microsoft Live, Java Open Layers • Southern Region developed and is currently testing GIS “RIDGE” radar images as a Google Earth overlay with Real-Time 2 minute updates. 7. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) What does this mean to the RIDGE Version 2 Team? • RIDGE Version 1 is a Power-User Page • Not a General Public Page (Mosaic Pages are General) • RIDGE Version 2 will be broken down into three components • General Public Page • Mosaic Images only (No more need for Not Available) • Low Bandwidth Pages • Power User Page • Similar to Current Version with some additional features • Archive Page (NCDC and RIDGE) • RIDGE to cover first 48 Hours then NCDC, Interface to archives will be part of RIDGE Version 2 NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  8. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) RIDGE Version 2 – General Public Page • Use Mosaic Radar Images Base Reflectivity Only • Long Range [20 SDUS7iccccN0Z - Base Reflectivity - (0.50 Degree)] • Static and Loop • New Color Curve for Mosaic • Low Resolution Mosaic, zoom to higher resolution • No Individual Radar Selections (Always get Mosaic) • Use WMS Watch/Warning Service (Toggle Options) • Use Google Maps API for Back Ground Maps • Redirect to http://water.weather.gov (Storm Total Precipitation) • Low-Bandwidth Pages • Create Archive Page (Request Past Weather) • Use Mosaic Echo Tops for Aviation Community NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  9. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) RIDGE Version 2 – Power User Page • Use the Google Maps API • Additional backgrounds (Not Team controlled) via KML files • Interactive individual Radar Page (WSR88D, TDWR, ASR4) • Circle Dots (WSR88D), Triangles (TDWR), Square (ASR4) • Interactive dots • Green – Current • Yellow – 20-30 Minutes Old • Red - >30 Minutes Old • Use WMS Watch/Warning Service (Toggle Options) • Utilizes the IRIS-DB and PostGres Database • Database Radar Products listed below (Confirming Availability) • FTM, VCP, Z/R, -20C Level, 0C Level, Storm Motion, Clutter Suppression, MAXPRA, RAINZ, RAINA, MPE Bias, POSH, Offset NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  10. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) RIDGE Version 2 – Power User Page • Following Products (Available with Version 2.0.0) • WSR88D (Currently 155 Radars) • 19 SDUS5iccccN0R – Base Reflectivity - 124 nmi Range (0.50 Degree) • 20 SDUS7iccccN0Z - Base Reflectivity - 248 nmi Range (0.50 Degree) • 27 SDUS5iccccN0V - Base Radial Velocity - 124 nmi Range (0.50 Degree) • 37 SDUS5iccccNCR - Composite Reflectivity - 16 Levels, 124 nmi Range • 41 SDUS7iccccNET - Echo Tops • 48 SDUS3iccccNVW - Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) Wind Profile • 56 SDUS5iccccN0S - Storm Relative Mean Radial Velocity (0.50 Degree) • 57 SDUS5iccccNVL - Vertical Integrated Liquid (VIL) • 75 NOUS6iccccFTM - Free Text Message (Used For Radar Outages Only) • 78 SDUS3iccccN1P - Surface Rainfall Accumulation - One Hour Running Total • 80 SDUS5iccccNTP - Surface Rainfall Accumulation - Storm Total NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov

  11. RIDGE - (Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements) RIDGE Version 2 – Power User Page • Following Products (Available with Version 2.0.0) • TDWR (Currently 45 Radars) • 181 SDUS5iccccTR0 – Base Reflectivity – Base Elevation (8-Bit Product) • 186 SDUS5iccccTZL – Long Range Reflectivity – (0.60 Degree) (8-Bit Product) • 182 SDUS5iccccTV0 – Base Radial Velocity – Base Elevation (8-Bit Product) • 37 SDUS5iccccNCR – Composite Reflectivity • 41 SDUS7iccccNET – Echo Tops • 48 SDUS3iccccNVW - Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) Wind Profile • 57 SDUS5iccccNVL - Vertical Integrated Liquid (VIL) • 75 NOUS6iccccFTM - Free Text Message (Used For Radar Outages Only) • 78 SDUS3iccccN1P - Surface Rainfall Accumulation - One Hour Running Total • 80 SDUS5iccccNTP - Surface Rainfall Accumulation - Storm Total • ASR4 • To Be Determined NWS RIDGE TEAM http://radar.weather.gov
