  2. Location: • In the upper anterior portion of the mediastinum underneath the sternum.

  3. Thymus Hormones Thymosin- Regulates actin monomer content of cytosol, which is used for movement of filaments within cells. Thymopoietin- Functions to differentiate thymocytes from precursor cells in hematopoietic tissue. Eventual development into T-lymphocytes.

  4. Importance of Thymus Hormones • The importance of the previously listed hormones are: • Intracellular movement of molecules. • Stimulation and production of lymphocytes (immune system cells). Critical to protection from harmful pathogens, bacteria, and viruses.

  5. Thymus Regulation • Thymal activity and formation of T-cells occurs during early development and is followed by atrophication of the entire gland. By old age the thymus becomes a vestige of fat and fibrous tissue.

  6. Thymus Disorders • Thymal irregularities or malfunctioning of this gland can lead to severe immunodeficiency and infection. If lymphocytes aren’t developed, as is the purpose of the thymus, the body will lack protection from disease and other microbiological agents.

  7. Treatments for Thymal Disorders • Treatments for thymus deficiency are few, but include the injection of thymal extract and the use of strong antibiotics to treat infection.
