The Ontario Application Process • All Applications to OCAS • Ontario College Application Service • Application cost - $95 • For 5 programs – no more than 3 at any one college • Additional programs are not possible • All applications are done on-line • At home or in Guidance • Application due date February 1, 2019 for equal consideration with all applicants (even if you aren’t starting until January 2019 • Should be done before Christmas holidays

  3. Communication • You must have an e-mail address before you apply (it should be suitable)If you change your email, notify Guidance and OCAS) • Check it often after you apply • This is the way OCAS, the colleges and Guidance prefer to communicate with you

What the school sends • October • Demographic information • Final marks of completed grade 9 to 12 courses • First and second semester courses you are taking • Community involvement and literacy test info • November • Application data sent to colleges • February • First semester final marks • Update semester 2 courses • April • Second semester mid term marks • July 2019 • Final second semester marks • Proof of graduation

  5. Admission Date • All high school applicants will hear their admission decision on or after February 1, 2019 • Most applicants must respond to an offer of admission by May 1, 2019 or lose their spot • Applicants should check their offers of admission for exact deadline dates.

Admission Requirements • Different programs and colleges have different required courses – • English, Math and Science • There are recommended courses as well for each program • Admission may be based on: • All grade 11 and 12 marks OR only required courses • Admission is based on formulas individualized and set by each college • Research on ontariocolleges.ca and on individual college websites – it is the student’s responsibility to completely research your program choices – especially highly competitive programs

Admission Requirements • Highly Competitive Programs • This is a program where there are more qualified applicants than the program’s capacity • These programs don’t usually accept applications after February 1 • Consider applying for another program as well • Consider applying at a more remote college • Strive to get the highest marks you can achieve (the cut-off could be much higher than the minimum marks required)

Highly Competitive Programs • Many Health and Medical programs i.e. Dental Hygiene, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Paramedic, Radiography • Social Service Worker, Early Childhood Education • Veterinary Assistant and Technician • Some Aviation programs, Powerline • See www.ontariocolleges.ca/apply/highly-competitive-programs

  9. Multiple Offers of Admission • You may be offered admission to several or ALL of your 5 choices • You may only accept ONE offer • You must respond to OCAS with the program you wish to accept • If you accept a second program, the first will be cancelled

Timelines • October / November • Research • On-line Ontario College Application is available • Colleges will begin to receive applications October , 2018 • December or earlier • Apply on-line (recommended to be done with a guidance counsellor) • January • Buffer month to fix any payment problems or amend applications • February 1, 2019 Application Due

  11. Research • Attend College Sessions – sheets posted in Grade 12 classrooms & Guidance • Go to CIP @ Fanshawe (Wed. Oct. 17) • Check out EESS and college web sites • Visit the college campuses • Use www.ontariocolleges.ca and college viewbooks

  12. Research • Check the college viewbooks in Guidance • New Programs • Open Houses • Preview Days • Check bulletin boards outside guidance • Check each college’s website • Make an appointment with your guidance counsellor

  13. Types of College Programs • Certificate Program – 1 year • Regular Diploma – 2 years • Technician • Advanced Diploma – 3 years • Technologist

Types of College Programs • Graduate Certificate • must already have a college certificate or diploma • Bachelor’s Degree - 4 years • University admission requirements (6 4U or 4M courses) • Collaborative Program • joint education between college and university – you may receive both a diploma and a degree.

  15. Co-op Programs • Many programs have a co-op component. • This costs extra money. • There is no guarantee that you will get a co-op placement. • The extra money gives you access to the co-op employer list. • Many co-op placements are paid positions which can offset the cost of your education.

  16. Financing Your Education • Scholarship Seminars • Early December • You will receive an e-mail notification of the exact dates and times • Make sure you have a valid e-mail on file with the guidance office

  17. Financing Your Education • OSAP (all students should apply) Seminar in the Spring • Entrance Awards • Bursaries • Business scholarships (ie NRG) • EESS commencement awards • Selected by committee from those who fill out the form • Thames Valley School Board awards

My Blueprint • Please use www.my.blueprint.ca/tvdsb as a research tool to help determine your future • Complete the high school planner section by inputting all the courses you have taken or will be taking over your high school career • Use your credit counselling summary to ensure accuracy • After completion you can make an appointment to review it
