CHOOSE CAREFULLY!! • New policy: Students are given a week to look through the Course Catalog and ask questions of parents, teachers, and counselors before making course decisions.  Allocation decisions for the following year are based upon student requests. • Please understand that you will not be able to make changes to your schedule once this school year ends, unless it is a level change due to grades or summer school attendance.

Calculating your UC/CSU GPA • First look only at 10th & 11th grade • Put a line through all non-college prep classes • Example: Team Sports, CAD, Woodshop • Add up all of you’re A’s, B’s, C’s, etc. • Only use college prep courses • Also add up how many AP courses (include language honors and Genetics honors) to a max of 8.

Requirements: • Attended a San Marcos High School for 4 years • Complete the “Are you on PACE” requirements • University minimum requirements also known as “a-g” • C or better in every class (at least a 2.0) • Grades COUNT! • Take ACT/SAT spring of junior year • Take additional STAR Questions junior year • High scores in Math and English= • PACE Scholarship ($1,000/year for four years) • you can test out of remedial Math and English college courses

  20. College Admission Testing • We recommend that as a junior you take the SAT and the ACT before the end of this year. • SAT: www.collegeboard.com • March 12th, May 7th, June 4th • ACT: www.act.org • February 12th, April 9th, June 11th • Always add the writing portion

Seniors Never “ReST” • Reach • Schools whose admit rate (based upon GPA/test scores) is extremely competitive. • Safety • You have a higher GPA/test scores than most incoming freshmen. • Target • Based on GPA/test scores, you have a 50/50 or better chance of getting in. **Apply to 3 or 4 schools in each of the above categories**

  24. What should I be doing now as a Junior? Evaluate your high school transcript. Are you on PACE (on track for A-G)? If you have any “D’s” you must make a plan with your counselor to repeat the course. Enroll in rigorous classes (Honors, AP) Senioritis will hurt you!!!!   25. Letters of Recommendation • Independent colleges and scholarships • Input from both students and parents • Forms can be picked up in the counseling office • Must give teachers / counselors at least 2 weeks notice.

NCAA Clearinghouse • Process required if you wish to participate in Division I or II Athletics in college • Begin process spring of junior year • No actual deadline but if you are not “cleared” through this process you cannot begin practice • If you plan to play sports in college you must inform your counselor, your coach and the Athletic Director Scott Jones. http://eligibilitycenter.org
