What Colleges Want * Packets are needed only if you are applying to schools that require letters of recommendations.
Spring 2014 • Purchase private school packets ($25) • If interested in D1/D2 NCAA sports, register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and submit official transcripts • Begin college search to determine whether or not you need letters of recommendation • If letter(s) of recommendation are required • Ask two teachers to write academic letters of recommendation (1 humanities, 1 math/science) • Ask two additional teachers (NOT letter writers) to complete green sheets
Summer 2014 Continue college search on Naviance to create a “prospective college list” to review with your counselor in the fall Use the Common App and UC essay prompts to draft essays needed for applications Update Naviance profile Sign up for fall SAT/ACT test dates Complete the Administrator/Guidance Counselor Secondary School Report form or build a resume (used for SSR packet) Complete the For the Teacher form
Utilizing Naviance Update all your information! This is what will appear on your Common App forms.
August 2014 Create Common App and UC accounts after August 1 Attend your counselor’s private school application mini-workshop (Satake/Saiki: Sept 3, Young/Allen: Sept 5) during tutorial in the Library Purchase packets if you haven’t already Confirm with letter writers/green sheet writers that they are still writing Solidify your college list for your meeting with your counselor
SAT/ACT Score Reporting • It is the students responsibility to report their scores to the colleges. • You get 4 free reports at the time of registration. • You can send SAT scores to all the CSU’s with one code: 3594 • The colleges will use the best scores, so do not hesitate to send all scores.
Financial Aid/Scholarships • In August, complete the SHS Scholarship Application (guidance website main page) • Apply for financial aid • FASFA (start in Jan. 2015) • Cal-Grant (start in Jan. 2015) • CSS Profile • SHS Scholarship Application • Outside scholarships
