MANAGING GROUPS AND TEAMS

Assignment Overview

The following case is an illustration of a group of people who have ceased to work together effectively.

You will be using the Johari Window model (from the Background page) to help diagnose and suggest

solutions to the problems this organization is facing.

Locate the following source in the Trident library by searching its title. You can also find it in the ProQuest

database by clicking on Additional Library Sources:

Business Case Studies, 8(6), 565.

Prepare a 4- to 5-page paper. Support your discussion with references to the background readings,

PowerPoint presentations, and additional research as needed. In your paper address the following:

Define the problem: What exactly is the problem being faced by Strident? How does group dynamics

(communications, trust, and conflict) contribute to the situation? How does the Johari Window model

contribute to our understanding of the problem?

Analyze the cause: What forces are working to create this problem?

Propose a solution: What does the company need to do to turn this situation around? Use the Johari

Window model to suggest solutions to the problems this organization is facing. Be specific in your

suggestions of recommended actions.

Overall, you must demonstrate that you have read, understood, and can apply the background materials

by citing them in support of your analysis.

Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated using the criteria as stated in the Case rubric. The following is a review of

the rubric criteria:

Assignment-Driven: Does the paper fully address all aspects of the assignment? Is the assignment

addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length

requirements?

Critical Thinking: Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived

from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in

the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of

discussion and analysis?

Business Writing: Is the essay logical, well organized and well written? Are the grammar, spelling, and

vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included? Are paraphrasing and

synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding, or is justification/support instead conveyed

through excessive use of direct quotations?

Effective Use of Information: Does the submission demonstrate that the student has read, understood

and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated

effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional

sources used provide strong support

sources used provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall

paper?

Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion

of proper citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g.,

references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been

included, and are these properly cited? Have all sources cited in the paper been included on the

References page?

Timeliness:Has the assignment been submitted to TLC (Trident’s learning management system) on or

before the module’s due date?

MANAGING GROUPS AND TEAMS

In this module, you have the opportunity to assess your own personal conflict style. You also will consider

the situations in which the style might be helpful, and when it might be less than optimal—or even

dysfunctional. Begin by logging on to the Leadership Center website and completing the Conflict-

Management Style Survey. Be sure to read the accompanying material that follows the survey.

Assignment

Compose a 2- to 3-page essay that addresses the following questions:

What is your primary conflict management style? Explain. In what types of conflict is your primary

style likely to be appropriate? In what types of conflict situations is it likely to be dysfunctional?

What is your least preferred style? What types of conflict situations are best handled by your least

preferred style?

What steps can you take to increase your use of your least preferred style in situations where it

would be most beneficial, and decrease the use of the preferred style when it is likely to be

dysfunctional?

slide4

Based on your results, explain how you could improve your conflict management behaviors and

under what conditions.

Based on your results, explain how improving your conflict management behaviors might

translate into actual behaviors at the workplace, and what might be the results of such an

improvement.

Include the actual Conflict-Management Style Survey results in an Appendix section of your

paper.
