  3. Operator Perspectives Regarding Evolving Systems • Change = cost and disruption to stable services/revenue streams. Any system change must be analyzed from a cost vs. benefit/return standpoint • Immediate investments in a stable system should be targeted for high demand/high return current features where the investment payback period is very short. • Near-term evolution should focus on performance enhancements which boost system revenues and returns based on existing cost-per-bit investments. • Mid-range/long term evolution should focus on performance enhancements that include reduction to cost-per-bit system investment. • Software changes should be prioritized. Hardware changes should include a cost-per-bit investment reduction. AIE TEM – Agenda Item 6

Evolution Category (page 1 of 4) • Category 1: Feature upgrade of 1x series (e.g., 1x, 1xEV-DO, 1xEV-DV) --- Enhancement of existing features --- • KDDI high demand/high return applications include: • BCMCS • Multimedia apps • Technology drivers for these applications are: • BCMCS • QoS Prioritize enhancements that minimize impact to BTS hardware. Evolution Category (page 2 of 4) • Category 2: Enhancement of cdma2000 --- System Performance Enhancements which enhance system revenues and returns based on existing cost-per-bit investments --- • Focus on peak data transfers and data throughput performance. • Support should include NxEV-DO. • HSDPA/HSUPA competitive peak rates Prioritize enhancements that minimize impact to BTS hardware. Evolution Category (page 3 of 4) • Category 3: Super cdma2000 --- Changes to 3GPP2 systems which focus on system performance enhancements in conjunction with reduction of cost-per-bit system investment --- • May be required for cdma2000 operators to compete with 3GPP “super 3G”. • Considering 4G requirements in ITU, mITF*, etc. *http://www.mitf.org/index_e.html AIE TEM – Agenda Item 6

Evolution Category (page 4 of 4) • Category 4: Super X system --- Joint work of the Category 3 enhancements with other organizations --- • May be required for cdma2000 operators to harmonize with 3GPP “super 3G”. • Technologies being developed under IEEE may be the candidates. AIE TEM – Agenda Item 6

  8. Summary • Four evolution categories are shown in this presentation. • 3GPP2 should clarify the scope of RAN evolution based on these categories. • On-going specification development efforts should NOT be impacted by RAN evolution activities. AIE TEM – Agenda Item 6
