  1. Pregnancy Project Matt Voyski Block G

  2. As the sperm meet the eggs, one sperm fertilizes the egg. This is called fertilization. • The organism that is formed from the combination of the sperm and egg is called a zygote.

  3. After one month the baby is called an embryo, during the time the baby is changing into the embryo the digestive system, heart, brain, nerves and lungs form.

  4. After two months the baby is called a fetus, and arms, fingers, legs, and toes begin to form. After the third month is about to end, the sex of the baby is visible, this is the end of the first trimester.

  5. As the baby is forming, it lives in an amniotic sac, where the baby lives in. The amniotic sac is filled with amniotic fluid which cushions the baby.

  6. During the second trimester, the baby’s skin develops, and the eyelashes and nails appear.

  7. During the third trimester the eyes open, almost all of the organs are complete and the skin is smooth and polished.

  8. Around the time of the end of the third trimester, the mother is about to go into labor, which begins at the first stage of labor, in which the cervix dilates. Sometimes the mother will get fake contractions, or Braxton hicks.

  9. Before the second stage of labor, in which the baby is delivered, the woman might get a epidural, which is a pain killer which is inserted through the spine or a episiotomy which is a small incision above the rectum.

  10. Before the baby is delivered there are multiple types of births the mother can choose, including Lamaze, which are breathing techniques. Water birth which is giving birth in a tub, breech birth which is the baby leaving with the buttocks or feet first. Vaginal birth is the traditional birth where the baby leaves through the vagina.

  11. For the Cesarean birth is when the doctor places a small incision on the abdominal wall. For a stillbirth the fetus has died in the uterus. A premature birth, the baby is delivered before all the organs have fully developed.

  12. During the third stage, the afterbirth is delivered and the baby is tested on a apgar scale, which tests the baby's health.

  13. During pregnancy, problems may occur like miscarriage, which is an natural end to a pregnancy, which may occur If the uterine lining has not grown properly. Premature birth is when the baby is born without the organs fully developed.

  14. A gynecologist is a doctor who performs pelvic exams, to search for cancers. An obstetrician is a physician who specializes in the care of a to-be mother and her baby.

  15. During pregnancy the mother should avoid alcohol, drugs and smoking. Doing any of these activities during the time of pregnancy greatly increases the chance of of a stillbirth, premature birth and lower birth weight.
