  2. Pregnancy Processes • Conception- • The union of a sperm and an egg, the process of becoming pregnant involving fertilization or implantation.

  3. Pregnancy Process… • Zygote- • After a female egg becomes fertilized. The zygote is made up of 46 chromosomes 23 from yourself and 23 from your partner. Once the egg becomes fertilized, the zygote begins a two week period of rapid cell division and eventually becomes an embryo.

  4. Undeveloped baby’s inside the womb • Fetus- • An unborn baby from two months to birth. • Embryo- • An unborn baby from implantation at two months development.

Development of the baby • End of 1st month- The heart, brain, nerves, digestive system and lungs form. • The length of the baby is 1/3 an inch and is called a embryo. • End of 2nd month- Arms, fingers, and legs form. facial characteristics appear, Length is 1 inch and the baby is known as a fetus.

  6. Development of the baby • End of 3rd month- First external signs of the gender or sex of the baby. Weight is 1.5 ounces and the length is 1.5 inches. • 2nd trimester end of 4th month- The skin develops and is able to move arms and legs. Weight is 6-7 ounces and the length is 4-5 inches.

  7. Development of the baby • End of 5th month- Fine hair develops and the growth rate slows. The weight is about a pound and the length is 9-10 inches. • End of 6th month- Fetus responds to noise and pressure with movement, increase of heartbeat. Weight is about 1.5 pounds as the length is 11.5-12.5 inches.

Development of the baby • End of 7th month, 3rd trimester- Eyes open weight is 3 pounds the length is 15 inches. • End of 8th month- All organs are completed, weight is 4 pounds and the length is 18 inches. • End of 9th month- Skin is smooth and polished birth weight is usually 6-9 pounds and is 19-21 inches in length.

Stages of labor • Agar scale- A scoring system to rate the health of a newborn baby grades heart rates, breathing rate, muscle tone, reflexes, and skin color. • Epidural- A pain reliever for pregnancy. Block pain in a particular part of the body. Will be given before labor. A needle is instead into the lower back into the spinal cord.

  10. Stages of Labor • Lamaze- To increase the woman's confidence while giving birth, helps to respond to pain that facilitate labor and increase comfort. Pain relieving techniques. • Braxton hicks contractions- Uterus muscles tighten for 30 to 60 seconds or as long as 2 minutes. Known as practice contractions, that will prepare you for the real thing.

  11. Stages of Labor • Episiotomy- A surgical cut in the muscular are between the vagina and the anus. Believing that a clear incision of an episiotomy would heal more easily than a spontaneous tear, which is made right before the delivery. • 1st stage- The cervix is completely dilated and effused. The cervix can become 8-10 cm in the last part of active labor.

  12. Stages of Labor • 2nd Stage- When the baby is delivered, and usually when an episiotomy is given at this time. • 3rd Stage- After the birth of the baby the placenta is delivered. The placenta supplies nutrients for a developing baby and also a method of waste disposal. The placenta is the only disposable organ.

  13. Types of Birth • Cesarean Birth- A surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus to allow a baby to be born, if a vaginal birth is not the safest. • Breech Birth- If the baby’s feet and/or butt is placed to be delivered first rather then their head.

  14. Types of birth… • Water Birth- When the baby is delivered under warm water. This is believed to have less stress on the baby. Although there can still be the threat of infection to the new born and inhalation under water. • Still Birth- When the Fetus dies in the uterus, and is born dead.

  15. Types of Birth… • Vaginal Birth- The most common way a baby is born. When the baby is positioned in the birth canal with their head delivered first from the vagina. • Premature Birth- When the baby is born earlier then week 37. There is usually going to be complications with the baby and is put in newborn intensive care unit which has specialized medical staff.

  16. Prenatal Care • Bleeding during a pregnancy can mean imminent miscarriage. • Smoking, doing drugs, can both harm the baby and possibly even addict the baby to what your taking. • Gynecologist- Specializes in the female reproductive system. • Obstetrician- A physical who specializes in medical and surgical care to woman with expertise in pregnancy and childbirth.   17. Importance of Prenatal Care • Having regular check ups with your doctor or any health professional. • You will have your date you have visited written down to show if there is any further vaccinations needed.
