By The time they enter first grade most boys and girls are able to perform seven of the eight fundamental loco motor skills. They generally will not be able to identify the names of the various skills but they have usually learned the basic skills and they are able to perform them. As children develop in the use of their bodies and learn to perform more specific motor skills, there is a real opportunity to gain a better understanding of each of the eight skills. Such information will permit the children to integrate the cognitive aspects of the movements with motor behavior. This association is referred to as a movement vocabulary. A well developed movement vocabulary will heavily influence the success a child will have in becoming a proficient mover.
