Searching for a Book @ the RMMS Library • The student will be able to: • Locate books in online catalog • Use vocabulary to broaden/narrow search • Discern whether a given book is available in the collection currently • Request a title that our library does not own Ms. Smith, Librarian September 2012

Let’s Multitask! • The questions for today’s assignment are posted on the following slides. • You will answer them on your own paper; this is due at the end of class. • You can simply answer the questions; you do not have to RACE your answers. • Have another browser open to our library’s web site so that you can search the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

  3. 1. If you like scary books, and your teacher has told you to choose a novel, what search terms would you type into the catalog? Try it now.

  4. 2. Choose one book from your search. Give the title, author, call number, and a brief summary of the book.

  5. 3. List the search term(s) you would use to find a book in which two characters fall in love. Now try it!

  6. 4. Provide the title, author, call number and short summary of one book in your result list. Is it available in the library right now?

  8. 6. Maybe you’ve read a book by an author before, and you want to know if there are books by that author in our library. What do you type in the OPAC? Go on, try it out! Suzanne Collins Caroline Cooney Stephen King Neal Shusterman Obert Skye

  9. 7. If we have books by that author in our library, list one title, the call number, and a brief summary. If we don’t have any, please fill out a purple form. This helps us make sure we get books that students actually want to read!
