Indian Nationalism Grows Two groups form in India Hindus and Muslims Both hated the British Learned about nationalism while fighting in the British Army during WWI When they returned from the war—treated as second-class citizens British passed the Rowlatt Acts—allowed government to jail protestors without trial

    3. Hindus and Muslims protested—went to city of Amritsar (10,000) British had put a ban on any public meetings British opened fire into crowd (400 dead, 1,200 wounded)—Known as the Amritsar Massacre

    4. Gandhi’s Nonviolence Gandhi attracted millions of followers as a response to the British cruelty Officers from Amritsar Massacre weren’t punished—Gandhi institutes Civil Disobedience Deliberate refusal to obey the law Used Boycotts—don’t buy British goods, pay British taxes, or vote in elections Gandhi pleaded for non violence—protests sometimes got violent Salt March—marched 240 miles to sea to make own salt—noticed by the world

    6. Britain Grants Limited Self-Rule Protests continued—Indians continued to be passive Pressure from outside world increases 1935-- granted limited democratic elections Not totally independent Hindus and Muslims clashed over how India should be run Leads to later conflict

Nationalism in Southwest Asia Result of the breakup of Ottoman Empire Only allowed to keep Turkey 1922—Greeks invaded Turkey—commander named Mustafa Kemal saves country After war, Turkish nationalist overthrew last Ottoman sultan—Kemal became President Oil discovered in region—made it even more valuable
