  2. What is cellular respiration? Cellular respiration is the process of breaking down glucose using oxygen to produce energy to allow our bodies to function properly. Glucose + Oxygen (o2) = Carbon Dioxide (CO2) + Water (H2O) + Energy (ATP) C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy Glucose is present in the food we eat, oxygen is found in the air and in water.

  3. How and where does it happen? Cellular respiration happens in the cells in our bodies. This process has 3 main steps, the first step is called Glycolysis and it occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell. This part does not need oxygen. The next step is called the citric acid cycle, this part happens when oxygen is present but doesn’t use oxygen directly. This stage takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria. The last step is called the electron transport. This stage does need oxygen directly. And it takes place along the inner membrane of the mitochondria.

  4. Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration Cellular respiration is also known as Aerobic respiration because it happens in the presence of oxygen. Humans, Animals and plants used aerobic respiration Some organisms use Anaerobic respiration because they live in environments with less oxygen, there for anaerobic respiration doesn’t require oxygen. Organisms like some kinds of bacteria rely on anaerobic respiration.

  5. Why do we need cellular respiration? We basically need cellular respiration to be able to function properly. Because it is one of the main sources of energy for our bodies. Our bodies need continuous glucose supply to that there is a steady ATP production.

  6. Cellular respiration is animals and plants Plants: Plants have a different system. They use photosynthesis which is using light to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugar (glucose). Animals: Animals obtain glucose by eating plants, bacteria or other animals.
